Default Bar chewing

Diego (syrian) has taken to chewing the bars of his savic metro at night.. He gets out for an hour every night and has pleeeenty of enrichment in his cage, especially for gnawing on!

Im sure I've seen someone use hemp roll to line the inside of the cage.. is this advisable?

Default Re: Bar chewing

If he's chewing in one particular spot then you could try cardboard on the bars there, he might just chew it off but it's easily replaceable & a lot better than chewing the bars! You could put a piece of hemp mat there too if you wanted to try that.
Is he doing it in the night or when you're around? If you're up when he does it try to ignore him, if you go to them when they chew the bars it can become an attention seeking habit.
It maybe that the cage is a bit small for him as it is on the small side for a Syrian ham.
Have you tried scatter feeding & hiding food and or treats so he has to work to find them?
What chews does he have? If he doesn't have one a whimzee dog chew can distract them from bars & keep them happy for a while as most hams love them.
There's a thread here with ideas that can help with bar chewing.
Managing Bar Chewers

ETA forgot to ask about his wheel? Which one does he have, is it big enough & does it spin freely?
