Default How much bedding in Detolf?

So I have the Ikea Detolf as my cage and I'm wondering how much bedding it needs, like I know there's supposed to be a point in the cage where there are at least 6 inches of the substrate but in terms of packaging: Will a 4kg bag a Fitch fill it up nicely?

You'll need more than that, don't know exactly how much but I'd get at least 3 to start with. You need to get extra anyway for spot cleans.

For a Syrian you'll want one end filled right up - 6 inches is barely enough for them, I'd fill to 8 inches. Probably put the wheel at the opposite end with only a couple cm of bedding and the middle will slope. Some people put the wheel in the middle but I don't think only being able to burrow at each end is ideal.

I would really think about a raised lid if possible though, it makes everything a lot easier especially for Syrians. I've just used a mini duna lid off gumtree just over the wheel area and it means you can bring the bedding depth right up, enabling them to burrow underneath the wheel - they tend to enjoy doing that. Then a flat lid for the rest of the cage. Not exactly the prettiest solution but it requires no DIY and works well.

You would definitely need more than that, a 10kg bag might do you to get started but maybe someone with a detolf will have a more exact idea.

I linked the Finacard softcard bale on another thread You need a lot to start with but after that you shouldn't need very much that often as most of it will stay clean and dry and just need spot cleaning occasionally - you can do that for a very long time. If the base needs a wipe at some time and you remove the substrate for that reason you should be able to replace at least half to 2/3 of it again and mix in a bit of new. Basically the more you have in to start, the less you use long term, so it would be good to start with a big bale and see how much is left.
