Hamster potty v sand bath
Hi everyone,
I owned many many hamsters as a child but it seems like a totally different ballgame nowadays. I知 getting my son one for his bday and am keen to have it pee in a certain place so have ordered a hamster potty and litter.
I知 also interested in providing it a sand bath - how should these be introduced to ensure a separate sand bath / toilet situation or is it inevitable it would end up being the same thing?
Thanks xx

Re: Hamster potty v sand bath
Are you getting a Syrian or dwarf ? I have a dwarf and there is so little urine I can’t seem to find it. Most dwarfs will pee on their wheel while running so it needs to be cleaned every morning. Sometimes I also find pee on his paper towel roll, and I just rip it off or replace it with a new one.
I have a sand bath for him and he likes it a lot, he goes in it many times a day. I once found that he peed in it but it doesn’t seem to be a habit.
What I do is I place a square piece of white paper towel in each corner, and remove it when I do my spot cleaning. So whatever corner he chooses as his potty, I’m sure cleaning will be easy. Mine doesn’t seem to pee in corners, just poop, but f he did, it would be easy to see.
If you get a Syrian, I think the urine is much more visible. They are a lot bigger and pee a lot more.
I would definitely get a sand bath, use paper towels in the corners and go from there. Once you know your hamster’s habits, you can adjust.

Definitely don't use the potty litter. Those are pretty much exclusively made from clay, which if ingested can lead to serious intestinal blockages(unlike solid hard clay cage accessories which cannot be chewed and are safe).

Unless the hamster already uses a hamster toilet, it's pot luck whether it will be used or not. I had one for our dwarf hamster, and she didn't use it. Now I just have a sand bath for her, which doesn't seem to get used for undesirable purposes, and she selects her own corner of the cage for any other business. It's easy to spot clean as required.
