Default Which of these 2 cages are best

Hello!!!
Which one of these are best for a syrian hamster???
Please help, the Barney cage is bigger but is made cheaply according to reviews.

The 528 is smaller but haven't seen any complaints.

Thanks in advance.

I would go with the Barney, the other one is a bit small for a Syrian, lots of members here use the Barney without any problems.

I’d try not to go smaller than the Barney for a Syrian. Definitely wouldn’t say it is cheaply made I actually quite liked its build. Maybe not quite as sturdy as ferplast or savic cages but it’s still good. It is usually cheaper on zooplus, where there is also the Alexander cage which comes with a few more accessories. The savic plaza is around the same size too and not much more expensive if you want a front door.

Don’t know anything about the Prevue but as I said bigger is better for a Syrian, you’re very likely to want to upgrade from that since lots of Syrians will want more space.

I would definitely recommend the Barney cage. It doesn't look cheaply made. My syrian Bramwell is very happy in his. The Barney is very spacious and you can fill it with plenty of substrate, toys and fit a decent sized 33cm wheel in it with room to spare!

The Barney is usually a lot cheaper on Zooplus! It’s a very good cage though so I definitely recommend it, I believe it’s around £45 on Zooplus right now?

The Prevue is basically just the Alaska with a different platform so it’s alright for a small Male Syrian but it’s quite difficult to fit in all the Syrian size toys. It’s also just cheaper on zooplus. It’s got tbe best height out of most 80cm cages but most Syrians do better in 100cm cages. I have a male Syrian in the Alaska/Prevue currently and I’m planning to upgrade him to the Alexander or Barney soon because I find it difficult to create an enriching environment for him.

Other good 100cm cages for Syrians are the Alexander, Savic Plaza, Ferplast Criceti 100, and Ferplast Maxi Duna Multy.

I have the Barney - it's a great cage. It's true the plastic base isn't as tough and solid as the Savic ones but it's absolutely fine. Costs about £54 on Zooplus - it's a great size cage for a Syrian and comes with a good house and shelf so not much more to buy.

Alternatively there is the Savic Hamster Plaza which has a big front opening door - sold by Pets at Home - it's 100cm x 50cm. It's normally £75 but I saw them selling it for £56 online the other day.

The Prevue is probably not as well made and dimensions aren't as good.

The Alexander on Zooplus is also a brilliant cage. The Barney and Alexander also have 7mm narrow bar spacing so could be used for a dwarf hamster in the future - with the right set up.

The Alexander and Savic Plaza are slightly less bulky, footprint wise as they are both 50cm deep whereas the Barney is 54cm deep - it might not sound much but it does make it stick out quite a bit further (but also gives loads of extra floorspace!).

My choice would be the Savic Plaza - it's a good size and a bit front door is good for interaction and taming and just doing stuff in the cage - plus you can attach things to the roof as no door on the roof. It is a couple of cm taller than the Barney so needs the base filling with substrate to avoid any fall risks and any hard items under a shelf. The downside is it needs a house really and that would cost extra, although you could make a cardboard shoe box house.

If I didn't have the Barney I'd get the Plaza
