Smile teddy’s bin cage thread

so i’ve decided to make a bin cage for my mae syrian Teddy! i’ve found a 104L (35x19x13) clear plastic bin at canadian tire for under $20 which i plan on using.

my only issue at the moment is finding suitable wire mesh. most of what i’ve found on amazon has been quite expensive. however, i do have the tank topper from his current tank which i figured i could use the wire mesh stuff from for ventilation in the bin.

i’ll keep this thread updated throughout the process! if anyone has any tips i’d love to hear them! thanks!

I got mesh from Lowe's, though it was a lot more than I needed. But if the tank topper fits, use that!

I’d just use part of the cage topper tbh. Good luck with your bin cage, I’m sure your hammie will enjoy his new home!

If you have wire stuff from a tank topper, use it! I recently made a bin cage for my hammy and it was pretty easy and inexpensive. Good luck and keep us updated

long time no update!! i finally got around to making teddy's bin cage! it's a bit smaller than i had planned on, a 50L, because they didn't have the size i wanted, but it's certainly an upgrade from his original 20L tank. instead of using mesh, i drilled holes into the lid instead. i moved him in today and he seems to be loving it!! i also bought one of those hanging chew things, which he already loves and a timothy hut thing with the hanging ball. i also bought him a second food, the vitakraft vitasmart complete nutrition, which i added a tablespoon of to his regular pellets, to add some variation and to get some extra nutrients in him. he already seems to have settled in quite well!

he still hates being picked up, but we recently got him a hamster ball which i am hesitant to use much because of the fear of his little feet getting stuck, but he seems to love it and im working on getting him more comfortable with being handled and i'm starting to use the tub as a playpen.

(the last photo is before i got the timothy hut, etc, did some rearranging)

How many holes did you drill? You’ll need a lot for adequate ventilation (around 150- 200 atleast). Other than that, the cage is definitely a great improvement from his old 20L cage but he’ll more than likely need another upgrade in the future. More importantly though, hos wheel looks a bit small. He needs a 12 inch wheel so that he can run with his back totally straight

theres over a hundred holes, but i think i'll drill more soon. and his wheel is a 9" i believe which is smaller than the recommended i've seen but his back does not arch at all while he runs on it. i am planning on getting him a new one because his is quite loud and i'd like to move him back into my room.

yep, it just took a while to convince my mom he needed a bigger cage ("if he needed a bigger cage why did the guy at the pet store recommend this one" "he seems perfectly happy in this tank" are some things she said to me) but i'm going to definitely upgrade him again in the future

I love your little hammy. He has wonderful coloring and looks very content. I've recently made a bin cage and found both 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch wire mesh at Home Depot. They had small rolls of about 4 feet long. Hope this helps.
