Exclamation moving hamster to bathroom at night?

hey all,

i absolutely cannot get to sleep with the sound of my hamsters wheel rattling and squeaking all night long. until i can get a silent spinner or quieter wheel, is it okay to move his tank into my bathroom at night? i’ve got him in there now, on my bath math with blankets around the sides of the tank in case it gets a bit drafty in there (which i don’t think it should), i plugged in a nightlight which doesn’t really shed much light in his tank but it’s just enough in case he needs some which i don’t think he does. i can hear him still going at it on his wheel so i guess he doesn’t mind?? i also left the door cracked open a bit to let air flow. also, should i wait till he wakes up to move him back or can i move him back while he’s still sleeping or would that startle him

Is there not another room where you can put him? The bathroom really isn't ideal, probably more chemical cleaners used in that room than anywhere else in a house, different scents etc, it's ok to use the bath for play time for short periods but I wouldn't leave a ham in there all night.
He should be in darkness at night too, no lights.
If you move him when he's sleeping he might wake up but probably wouldn't be that bothered, make sure to take out anything that might fall on him though!

Agree. Also their cage shouldn’t be moved regularly as it’s a change of environment and causes stress. Could lead to stress behaviours as well. If you do have to move him out of your room until you get a silent wheel then not the bathroom really especially as people will be using it and could kick the cage or it get too steamy. Exotic nutrition ship the silent runner to Canada I believe.

i could put him in our laundry room, if that would work. and i don’t want to move him too much because of the effects and i plan on getting a quieter wheel asap. i also plan on buying him a bigger cage because right now he’s in a 10 gallon tank which is way too small

Yes it is very small for a Syrian - what are you planning to get? Bin cages can work out cheap if you don't mind the diy. Barred cages are hard to find and expensive. I think Petsmart does a 90cm terrarium for about $90 - and you can find $1 per gallon sales at some pet stores.

Laundry room may also be steamy. Just wondering if ear plugs may be the solution until you get a wheel sorted!

i’ve decided to make a bin cage. canadian tire has a 104L (35x19x13) bin for under $20. and i have the tank topper from his current tank which i can probably cut the mesh wire stuff out and use for ventilation in the bin. and we are ordering a brand similar to silent spinner wheel soon as i can’t find the 8 inch silent spinner anywhere

I thought you were getting the silent runner? The silent "spinner" isn't silent by the way - in fact it can be quite noisy. The silent "runner" from exotic nutrition is totally silent. The silent "spinner" only comes in 6.5" (far too small - dwarf hamster size) or 12" (far too deep and bulky). The silent runner is 12" but slimmer and just right for a Syrian. If a 12" wheel is going to be too big then an 11" wodent wheel might be the answer (exotic nutrition also sell those at the cheapest price I believe). Now that is not totally silent but it's pretty quiet - almost silent.

Or there is the Carolina Storm bucket wheel (if they ship to Canada) which is 10" diameter - and extendable in height. That is fine for an average sized syrian but may not be big enough for a large syrian (eg over 180 grammes weight). It also has ball bearings and is silent. They need to be able to run with a straight back and they also run better and easier in a larger wheel.

The 12" silent runner is about the best wheel you can get - it's silent because it has ball bearings. I've had mine over 2 years with no issues and it's still going strong. Best wheel I've had - others broke. It's also a very sturdy wheel and has a safe solid stand - nowhere to get trapped.

This is the 11" wodent wheel

In Canada, Carolina Storm wheels are sold from this Toronto seller

The bin sounds good except 13" height is a bit low maybe for fitting a wheel in and enough substrate. The Iris Christmas tree bins are good for a bin cage if you can find one and no cutting required if you make a lid out of grids like the one on the link below

https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/h...2749p.html#srp

See first and third photos on this link - on the other hand if you want extra height for the wheel then cutting the lid and meshing it would give more height.

https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=ir...iw=800&bih=440

I reckon you'd be best with the Carolina Storm wheel as it's silent and not as tall as the silent runner. Either that or the 11" wodent wheel.

Meanwhile - just thinking your hammy will be getting a bit stressed being moved around and in a 10 gallon tank. What wheel has he got now? Could you make a temporary bin cage quickly?

thanks for the tips! the carolina storm wheel sounds great but it is quite expensive. which do you think is quieter the wodent wheel or the silent runner? his current wheel is an all living things one. we don’t have anything large enough for me to make a temporary bin cage. do you think i could just move his cage upstairs for the time being, day and night, until i make the bin cage? that way i wouldn’t have to keep moving him around?

i think i’ve decided to buy him the 12 inch silent runner. his current wheel is 8 inches and he fits just perfectly so i feel like the 9” would be fine, but i want to be safe so i’m going to get the larger one.

That does sound better, moving him somewhere where he can stay in one place The silent runner is definitely silent and spins very well and easily. I had a wobust wheel for a while (biggest wodent wheel and it was horribly huge - looked like a hat box) - it wasn't noisy at all. But couldn't call it silent either - just not rattly or noisy - a gentle swoosh noise. Some people have had them that squeak about round the spindle - after some time - but there are solutions for that. It doesn't spin quite as freely as the silent runner but people have used them for years without issue.

The only thing is, maybe the 12" silent runner wouldn't fit in his 10 gallon tank? The height on the stand is 35cm. The 11" wodent wheel height is about 32 to 33cm on the stand. It's one of the lowest 11" wheels. I guess you could get the 9" silent runner but the it could work out expensive if you felt it needed upgrading to the bigger one. Although I suppose you could sell the 9" one then.

Meanwhile just make sure he has lots of cosy substrate - at least 4 inches - more if possible and some kind of dark place to hide - either a shelf to go under or a good sized house, and it well help him feel happier in his tank. Giving him plenty of out of cage time will help meanwhile as well.

Yes I thought the Storm Wheel looked expensive but wasn't sure what the Canadian dollar conversion was compared to the US dollar so couldn't tell if it was expensive or not.

i've decided on the silent runner 12" because i don't want to have to upgrade if the 9" is too small. if it is too tall for the tank, ill just figure something out i guess lol. he doesn't like to be picked up, but i'm considering using the tube method with the treat inside it to et him out then i'll probably use the bathtub as a playpen thing. and he was in the laundry room last night and was acting normal so he'll stay in there until i get the new wheel!
