Default Hamster tank - question

Hey there! My mom got me a hamster tank, etc for christmas, and we went to pick out the hamster yesterday. His name is Teddy Squish Dog, but I tend to call him Sir or Little Idiot (lovingly, of course). He's a syrian hamster, and i think around a year old? We're not sure.

I caught him chewing the silicone at the corner of his tank today, and after browsing through some ideas to solve this, I bent those bendy log things into an L shape and put it into that corner to stop his chewing. He was chewing at the wood when he discovered it (which is fine of course), then ignored that area. I hope that this solved the problem.

However, i checked, and my mom got the 10 Gallon tank. I think this is too small for him after reading some articles?? But since it was a gift I don't want to bring it up in case it annoys her. Is this too small? I want him to have the best life possible and i feel like he needs more room!

Also, he has two wooden chew sticks which he barely touches? and A Chewnel which he only goes through and doesn't chew. Any suggestions?

Thank you!

I replied to your question about the tank in your other thread, regarding chews many hams don't chew the wooden chew sticks or chew toys, what kind of sticks are they? Some will chew on hazel or apple sticks, some even enjoy chewing on cardboard, especially if you make little cardboard parcels to hide food or treats in then they will happily chew up the bo to find the food! Can you get whimzee or antos dog chews where you are? Most hams go mad for the whimzee dog chews, the toothbrush ones are most popular & that can keep them happy for quite a while.
I just checked Amazon Canada & they do sell the whimzee chews, you may be able to get them in pet shops too.

Yes 10 gallon is too small for a Syrian. Most people is a 40 gallon breeder tank (about 90cm by 50cm floor area) or a non cage about 80cm x 50cm. Haven’t seen Cypher’s reply - but - it’s tricky when it’s a gift. Time helps. It may be ok as a starter cage for a month if he gets plenty of out of cage time and has enough substrate and a house big enough and dark enough to nest in. Scatter feeding would help keep him occupied foraging but still put food in his bowl as well. Also his wheel needs to be big enough - at least 8” diameter - 11” plus is best for a fully grown hamster.

If you are able to make a non cage or can find money towards a bigger tank then maybe you could tentatively mention that you want to upgrade.

Whimzees are great! Do you have Petco or PetSmart in Canada? If so, they may be having their dollar per gallon sale. As someone mentioned before, 10 gallons is too small. We had originally had our Teddy (nice name!) in a 20 gallon tank, and it was too small. I was able to find a 55 gallon on the Facebook marketplace for $40, and he is very happy in there. Good luck and keep us posted! Congrats on your hammy!

thanks all!! yeah his wheel is big enough i think and he seems to be keeping himself occupied?? i’m definitely going to try and get a bigger tank because he definitely needs more room. i told my mom that i think it’s too small and she said “he doesn’t seem to mind” but how would she know she’s not a hamster expert and everything i’ve seen has recommended a bigger tank. and yes we do have a petsmart near me!!
