Default wheel in detolf

for christmas i was lucky enough to get the ikea detolf and i made sure my wheel fit into the cage. My dad helped make the lid yesterday and i put pebble in it last night, but i didn’t check if the wheel turns because i assumed it did, but it doesn’t. the lid takes off a little bit of height so it doesn’t turn anymore.

should i move her back into her old cage so she has the wheel? i don’t want to stress her out even more than she already is by moving her again while i’m fixing her cage, but she was not happy at all last night without it.

Can you make the lid taller by adding an extra frame/lip around the edge if that makes sense? Can you move things away from the edge so she can't climb out and just leave the lid off altogether? In the meantime maybe get a flying saucer as they're cheap and flat as a temporary wheel so she can at least run. I'd be reluctant to keep moving her back and forth.

Is the wheel set directly on the base of the detolf with no substrate you could move under it? If it is & there's no way you can fit the wheel in with the lid on then I would put her back in her old cage just for now rather than risk using the detolf without a lid & see if you can make a deeper lid as buttercuplols suggested. As she's only been in one night changing back to her old cage for a while shouldn't be stressful for her then you can give her time to settle in the detolf when you've got everything set up & working ok.

No don't move her back into her old cage - a move is a big change so best to leave her to settle in. Which wheel is it? There will be a way of making it fit even if you do end up having to replace it! eg you can attach a wheel to the end panel of the detolf instead of having it on its stand - by making a hole and putting a bolt through it with a nut on each end (one on the outside of the detolf, the other inside the wheel hub). Or you can bend the stand to shorten it a bit. Or as cypher says have the stand on the very base of the cage and lower substrate in that area. If you say which wheel it is, we can advise on the adjustments for that particular wheel.

Or you can get a new 28cm trixie wheel for about £9 and that should fit. The lowest 11" wheel is the wodent wheel if height really is an issue. Petplanet sometimes sell that for about £15 but it can be hard to get hold of without sending off for from Germany/Rodipet where it costs more plus postage.

What you could do for now is get a 12" flying saucer for £10 - until you get the wheel sorted - you will have space for both in a detolf so can leave it in until you get the wheel sorted. I have this one
