Default Best 100cm cage for robos?

Recently my robo Sundae has become much more confident and has begun showing signs of needing a bigger cage.

He’s currently in a Savic Ruffy 2 (80x50) and he’s fine with the 8 or 9mm bar spacing so I’m not too concerned about the bar spacing on 100cm cages since they’re around the same. I’m more worried about the height, are there any 100cm cages that aren’t 50cm tall?

I’m considering the Maxi Duna Multy (+ it would complete my Duna collection lol) but it’s very expensive for what it is. I might just make another 100cm bin cage tbh.

I’d get a detolf but unfortunately I don’t have the space for something that long right now

I think 50cm high in a barred cage is far too tall for a robo - mine was in a Barney last year and I switched it out in just a couple of weeks as I just didn't feel it was at all safe.

That's essentially the same thing just shorter. The extra 4cm width does make a surprising amount of difference actually. I do wonder if it's almost too low though, but you would still be able to get an 8" wheel in there if needed.

The maxi duna does look good though. I suppose it depends on whether you prefer bars or plastic, or if you're wanting front doors too. If the bin cage has similar dimensions then I'm sure that would work fine.

I have the st elmo for my roborovski, Mallow and I love it. Easy to access via the huge top door and extra little doors at the front.

I took out the shelves, house and wheel.

Wonderful cage.

The Elmo cage is a great option - it's basically like a Barney but much lower! Otherwise I'd say any 100cm cage but you'd need to make a full level. The Maxi Duna is a good option to avoid the height issues (and if you prefer a cage rather than a tank the Elmo is the same dimensions as the maxi duna but has side doors). And a lovely cage too - but very expensive as you say.

The largest RUB bin is a good size - costs about £39. It's not a 100cm - it's 80cm I think - but it is 60cm deep so a good floor area. I think 100cm would be better though because they have the length of the cage to be active in.

I think if it was me I would get the Alexander - you almost have a full level already and I've seen many people make it safe for dwarf hammies. To make the full level you use the ladder as an extra joining piece between the two shelves - laid on top of them. Something else for access up one side (a long bendy bridge eg) and fill any gaps with the odd piece of wood or a flat hammock or something - there aren't many gaps to fill when you have the extra joining piece. It would also be a good idea to have a small extra shelf higher up over the bendy bridge ladder - so they couldn't fall down the hole onto the ladder.

I'll see if I can find some photos of Alexander set ups for dwarf hammies - used to be able to but since photobucket went a lot have disappeared from google images.

I think I would get the Alexander over the Elmo purely because of the extra space with the full level and more interesting.

If you have a look at the cage on the link below - there is a joining shelf at the back and a long wide ladder. You put the ladder across the two long shelves butting up to the joining shelf. That more or less makes a full level - the photo above shows how you could add another piece of wood or even stiff cardboard, or a flat hammock across any remaining space and just leave a narrow gap at the front (or back) for a ladder.

It also has a great long built in house which hammies like for nesting as it's big enough for a nest, hoard and litter tray and has two entrances. You can fill the base with substrate level to the top of the long house and then just channel out the substrate near the door for an entrance. Putting some substrate inside the house so it's not bare cage base underneath. Plus it comes with two extra houses - loads of space for a robo.

Thank you for the recommendations!

I think I will go for the Alexander but for my Syrian Sunflower and then move Sundae into Sunflower’s old bin cage (95 x 45cm). Sundae loves burrowing and the bin cage will allow a lot deeper substrate than any wire cage (also no more sand kicked through the bars!)

I have the maxi runa multi after so much deliberation and although it was about £80 on Amazon I'd say it was worth every penny! My hamster is very, very happy in there.

What’s wrong with the large zoozone? It’s enormous and sturdy and half the price of the duna. The bars are obviously too wide for a roborovski but there’s no chance a robo could climb up the plastic to access the bars. I kept a single robo in one for ages and he maintained a huge burrow system seemed very happy in it.

That's good too with the lid meshed You're right it's a lot cheaper - some people find the lid a bit of a pain and the shape of the duna multy better.

The Zoozone is also a good cage but as Serendipity said, the Duna is a better shape and the bars don’t need meshing. I have two dogs and a cat so I can’t risk not meshing the lid, I also like the quality of Ferplast cages. It is much cheaper than the Maxi Duna Multy so it’s a good option for anyone that doesn’t mind meshing.

Honestly I completely forgot about the ZZ when I was considering cage options but bins are really cheap right now because christmas storage so I’ve just ordered more bins.
