Question Savic Hamster Heaven for Dwarf?

Hi!

I've came to hamster central today for some advice! I've currently got an empty Savic Hamster Heaven - 50 x 80 x 50cm and I'm yearning for another hamster to fill it.

I've got a love for Chinese hamsters and am currently scouring England for one! I've mostly had tank-style cages or large plastic cages so I'm not 100% confident in bar-spacing.

I was wondering if the bar spacing would be too large to keep a Dwarf or Chinese hamster in? Any additional advice would be appreciated! ♥

Yeah the hamster heaven is fine for dwarves, it’s better suited to them than for Syrians to be honest. I’d be a bit hesitant to have a baby chinese with that bar spacing, but as long as they’re not really tiny it shouldn’t be an issue. That said I haven’t seen a baby chinese in a really long time! Same applies to robo babies - Russian dwarfs will be absolutely fine though. Could always start them out in a bin or tank (if you still have one) to be on the safe side.

I've kept Chinese & Russians in the hamster heaven & it's fine for adults, most of mine have been about 10 weeks when I got them & the bar spacing was no problem but I think it may have been to big for my youngest at 5 weeks, I doubt she would have got out but she might have got stuck trying!
If you do use it I think it's always best used without the tubes, penthouse & other accessories, with the base filled with substrate you can use a house as a shelf or make small free standing shelves to maximise the space & have room for a large enough wheel, hideouts, sand bath etc.

Thank you so much for the advice, both of you!

I've got a lot of plans on the layout and don't intend on using the nesting box or tubes or any of the shelves the cage originally came with. I've used them with my small Syrian, Paprika (who now has an upgrade!) and found that I just wasn't happy using them in the past.

Now just to locate a Chinese hamster, they're quite slippery to find, especially up here in the North of England! ♥

Good luck with finding a little Chinesey, it's very hard to find them in most parts of the Uk now but hopefully you will.

You're telling me! I've been hunting on and off for about 3 years, I actually posted in the forum when I began my search originally! Since then, I can travel further now we have a car, but we're hoping for a yes from a breeder 3 and a half hours away from our home! Wish us luck!

Good luck in your search. Hamster shows are good places to get hamsters. Hopefully you will get a yes from the breeder you mentioned.

I have a hybrid dwarf in the hh. I love it. Such a good cage with its big door.

Thank you so much! I've never actually been to any hamster shows, or really know how they work haha! I'll have to look more into them, but there's a one not TOO far from my home in around a month's time so if we haven't got a yes by then i'll definitely have to check it out!

I do love the cage itself! Had my senior Syrian in it before he passed away (RIP Porkchop) as a downgrade, he really loved coming onto my hand from the doorway! ♥

I also love the cage Although I don't actually have one, but have it's twin with the 7mm bar spacing (Savic Mickey 2XL). The height is good for avoiding fall risks - the base is nice and deep, the front door is great and it leaves a plain roof for hanging things from and attaching things to, for lots of variety and enrichment.

Fingers crossed you find a Chinesey!
