Fitch bedding
I've read on here that Hammies love Fitch bedding and it makes a really got substrate. Can it also be used for nesting material or would I need to add something else as well?

Re: Fitch bedding
It can be used as both and hammies do tend to use it as both but they like nesting material as well. The best nesting material is just sheets of plain white toilet paper torn into strips. I tear the sheets lengthways to make longer strips. And then a big pile of it in the cage somewhere (but not in the house) - they will take some for the nest and you'll gradually see the pile go down and can keep topping it up. The Fitch is just a kind of "extra" in the nest. Our last hammy used to actually weave the strips of paper into a kind of cocoon and with a hole in and walk into it!

Re: Fitch bedding
Ok thanks that's what I thought. We do use shredded toilet paper already nesting material and just dump it in the cage so will continue with that.

Re: Fitch bedding
Silly question but I was wondering does it matter if it's not super soft toilet paper? My family buys quite cheap toilet paper so it's like alright but not super soft like some brands. Do hamsters care? I think my kitchen roll would be a bit softer but definitely thicker and warmer.

Re: Fitch bedding
Hamsters are quite happy with the cheap stuff and it’s what I tend to use in my hamsters nests. They tear it up to the way that they like it and if it’s colder I just tend to give them extra.

Re: Fitch bedding
Cheap stuff is fine, don't use kitchen roll as it doesn't break down the same way as toilet tissue does just in case any gets ingested.

Argh! Good job I saw this post, have just gone in the other room and removed all the shredded kitchen roll from their cages!!
Jin - I can vouch for the Fitch bedding, it is really brilliant! I think it was cypher who recommended it to me on one of my threads, and I'm glad I ordered it!
My girls seem to love it and they instantly burrowed down into it when they first arrived! (Edited to add that I use Fitch as their main substrate in the entire cages, not just where they sleep).
I also still have half a bag of bedding left over from my Syrian hamster, it is like blue shredded dishcloths, would that be suitable as extra nesting or shall I just use toilet roll from now on?

I’ve never heard of that bedding before but it doesn’t sound like it would be safe if it’s made of dish clothes Fabric could catch on their claws/teeth or cause digestive issues so its best to stick with tissue paper or a paper bedding like fitch or carefresh.

Re: Fitch bedding
There used to be a lot of that blue stuff im pet shop tanks at one time though it doesn't seem to be used so much now, I really don't know how safe it is, or isn't but wouldn't use it personally.

Re: Fitch bedding
You mean like J cloths? I remember some people using it. I think it’s supposed to be ok - it tears like paper. Plain white toilet paper is the safest generally and Jin the cheaper the better! The cheaper stuff is safer than the thicker stuff.
