There is also the wood 28cm Trixie wheel on Zooplus - same price as the plastic trixie. That would also fit. It's very stable and silent and has a cork running track which is nice for their feet - the whole thing including the cork needs painting with plastikote though so it's wipe clean and doesn't get pee stained. I've always just done the wheel bit and track and not bothered painting the stand with the wood wheels.

The Silent Runner is probably the best hamster wheel out there - but it is taller than all the others. It's a 12" wheel and on a stand which makes it taller as well. A 12" wheel isn't necessary. It's good because not only is it silent but it spins really well and easily and has a very safe sturdy stand. But the wood Trixie wheel is just as good and sometimes hamsters like jumping out of an open wheel Our last syrian loved jumping out of his wood wheel after a good run and landing with a plonk on the substrate and then lying there looking happy.

So I'd go with either the 28cm Trixie plastic or the 28cm wood trixie wheel plastikoted for a detolf. Or an 11" wodent wheel but they are very hard to come by in the Uk (impossible really - Rodipet in Germany sell them but at a cost - postage is high).

I prefer the Silent Runner for a barred cage because it attaches to the bars at whatever height I want but for a tank I think something like the 28cm wood Trixie wheel is good. I wouldn't go with the 9" Silent Runner for a Syrian - it might just be big enough if your hamster isn't particularly large but they run so much better in a larger wheel. A lot of people use the 9" silent runner for dwarf hammies It spins easily despite being bigger than needed.

And whatever kind of lid you want. Personally I don't see the need for additional height. Hamsters are ground dwellers and there's still plenty of space for levels.

The silent runner is by far my favourite, but ill purchase the Trixie wheel for now then, and see how things go thank you so much for your help xx

Ah! If you reall want the Silent runner - then maybe get it. I have to say mine has lasted over two years with no issues - unlike other wheels I've had which have broken. So maybe it's worth the price for the longevity (but don't submerge the bearings in water!). In that case two options - either a taller lid (I would still make two lids for ease of access - one flat and one raised. Or - the option I mentioned earlier about fixing the wheel to the end of the detolf. It's designed to be fixed to things instead of using the stand and the kit is good - two large plates to secure either side of a long bolt. It's a different bolt to the one that screws the wheel to the stand - but it is just a bolt! With a black plastic cap on the end - you could take the black plastic cap off and fix it on the end of any length bolt you want.

I think that's what I'd do If I wanted a Silent runner in a detolf. I am not so sure about the taller lids - stability and ease of access. But if you're good at that kind of thing it could be nice

These are the ones I've seen. I just like the look of them with the flat lid and some people put handles on the two flat lids so they're easy to lift off. The extra height wouldn't be that useable I think if you need to lift the whole thing off to get at the hamster. Sorry just resized that photo

It is a real shame to be limited to what wheel you can get just because of the height. I’d also consider a partly raised roof but not seen anyone build one like that.

Not the prettiest idea but I saw someone use the top of a mini Duna as a raised topper. Actually they used two - one at each end with a solid board in between but you’d only need 1 with a flat roof for the rest. Just tried it myself out of curiosity and it does fit perfectly! I don’t think a Syrian could lift it but it wouldn’t be difficult to secure anyway.

I do think a low topper would be easiest though just a 15cm tall one. Then you can have top openings still. With 8 inch bedding in most the cage you’d have no problems accessing everything. I think some of the toppers are unnecessarily tall and none of the height is even being used!

It shouldn't be too hard to create a slightly raised lid for the detolf , I've looked at some YouTubers and they've seemed to fit a 12 " silent spinner inside.

Slightly raised sounds the way to go then I'll see if I can find the thing where someone screwed the wheel to the end of the detolf (no height issues then).
