That's not suitable as a house, they need something that's going to be dark inside, wooden houses are best but you probably won't find one with two doors which is why I suggested the cardboard box really, something square or rectangle is usually best, there aren't many dark round houses around anyway, they need to be able to make a proper nest in there too with lots of tissue so not just enough room for them to just fit in.

ETA Just wanted to mention in case you don't know only having had Syrians that a sand bath with chinchilla sand is really important for dwarf hams, big enough to have a good roll around in!

Most 11" wheels fit in fine but unfortunately the 12" silent spinner doesn't - it's massive lol! What size is your Syrian's flying saucer? If it's the 12" one they might be able to use it but it's not idea - the 6.5" or 7" one is best.

Zooplus sell a 9" or 11" wood wheel with a cork running track for about £9 . It's a silent wheel and about 9cm deep. It really needs plastikoting though (painting wood and cork with plastikote pet-safe enamel paint) to waterproof it and make it wipe clean or it'll stink.

Personally I would get open wheels for a pair, rather than ones with holes in like the wodent wheels - so they can both easily jump in and out. Options then are limited to the Trixie Wood wheel mentioned above, or the 8" comfort wheel (if you don't mind the noise). For a larger wheel that is. The only 6.5" small wheel is the silent spinner but there have been a number of issues with that since a manufacturing change in that they won't spin well. If getting one try it out first. They're not cheap and probably better to get an 8" or 9" wheel as well. So two trixies and two comfort wheels? A 7" flying saucer as well would be a nice bonus The trixie wood wheels are silent.

As Cypher says I wouldn't use the pouch or anything fleece in the cage - maybe save it as a playpen toy where you can keep an eye on things or remove it easily. They hate things being removed from the cage.

Main thing with the set up is to avoid territorial behaviour, so they don't fall out and fight. So apart from no levels, any tube needs to be big enough that they can both fit in at the same time (eg rat sized tubes and tunnels) otherwise one can guard or block the entrance and get territorial over it.

The reason for houses having two or multiple entrances is similar - so one cant get trapped inside if the other guards or blocks the door. The easiest option is cardboard - eg a shoebox with holes cut in - maybe one each end and one in the middle on the long side, and one on top. A shoe box house would take up a fair bit of space but give them a nice large nesting area - but fitting two in could be a squeeze unless you have some childrens sized shoe boxes! So maybe one could be a tissue box with holes cut in and one a shoe box. Either way they need to be open underneath and sat on top of the substrate - that way they can burrow down and bury hoards in the house etc.

A good option with the shoe box is to cut the base out and use the roof as a lid. With the door holes cut in the long and short sides and one on top in the lid. That way you can lift the roof off to check inside if necessary without having to take the house out and messing up their nests etc.

So I would go for larger toys and give them loads of substrate - eg fill the base - it keeps them happy and they can dig tunnels. Also means you don't need to clean them out very often and can just spot clean occasionally.

So I'd go with - two cardboard houses, an 11" and 8" wheel and a 7" flying saucer, a rat tube and any other toys you have that are general toys. Or two 8" or 9" wheels and a 7" flying saucer or just two 8" or 9" open wheels

Plus two water bottles. There is only one water bottle hole on the maxi duna but you could have the other one in a bottle stand. You can make a bottle stand with a 500ml plastic water bottle - cut the top off and fill the base with stones (cleaned ones!). Cut a small hole in the front for the spout - the hamster bottle sits inside with the spout through the hole which holds it up. The difficulty with bottle stands is having them stable with deeper substrate - it might need to stand on top of something submerged - I used to havea little cardboard hay house under mine - with the front cut out so it makes an underground shelter (it only has one door). Our robo loves these and spends ages inside it scratching the hay off.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Rosewood-Na...ot+house+small It's cardboard with hay and dried carrot stuck on with vegetable matter - all edible. Only has one door though so better to make another one or just cut the front out completely if it's under a bottle stand and submerged.

Just a thought.

And either two food bowls or no food bowls and scatter feed.

To help them keep living together this kind of set up helps prevent fall outs. Not sure how old the daughter is but sometimes when the younger one gets older and hormonal it can happen.

Another tip I heard from people who have successfully kept pairs together for life is never to take one out of the cage - take them both out at the same time. Otherwise the one left in the cage can soon get territorial even in a very short period of time.

Thank you so much for such detailed and helpful replies. That's all really useful. Yep I've got chinchilla sand on order.

I'd certainly like to keep them living together if at all possible, I'll try and follow your advice and tips. I believe mum is approx. 9 months and baby about 11 weeks.

If I take them out the cage together should I keep holding both of them or can I put one down (say in a play area) and cuddle one at a time? xx

I don't know I think out of the cage it should be fine - it's if one is in the cage on their own they get territorial. Although best to give them equal attention I guess!

You could stand a bottle stand on anything really - an upturned glass bowl under the substrate or something There are other ways of making bottle stands as well or you can buy wood ones but they're not cheap.

Another option is having a submerged house under the bottle stand (or under the wheel) I've seen that done nicely. Rodipet do a rough granite slate that is good under a water bottle - helps keep their nails short every time they go for a drink. It's heavy though so would need to be supported underneath too. Or they can tunnel under and get squashed! It only costs about £4 but the postage is another £8! Or you can use a terracotta plant pot base - same kind of rough texture.

Handling just one at a time at least for short intervals is fine when they're out of the cage, it's only really a problem if you take one out of the cage & leave the other in.

Looking forward to meeting them! These logs with holes in make great toys - lots of entrances and fills up a fair bit of floor space

That log looks good! I like the slate idea for their claws too.
