Ideal roborovski cage setup

Hello

I have been trying to make my setup for my roborovski more interesting as I feel it's quite plain. I'm not really sure how many toys I should be putting in there without making it too open or too crowded so am looking for some ideas. A lot of the examples I have found online are quite open plan but I know she likes to hide a lot so don't think they're that suitable. The cage I have is an ikea detolf. I'd like to add deeper bedding but don't have a lid made, so will probably have to do something about that. Would appreciate any suggestions.

I would definitely make a lid when you can, it gives you a lot more options without having to worry about possible escapes & deep substrate really is important for them as they do love to burrow.

If you have a look at Nugget’s thread I have photos of his set ups on there. The first was in a glass tank (not as big as a detolf). And his second similar set up in a cage. It’s quite full so gives an idea. Robos love lots of bedding to tunnel in so with a detolf you could maybe have one end with deep bedding.

The setup cypher linked is my idea of a marginally more open plan one because my robo is clumsy but likes to burrow. Not all are like this though so your own setup should reflect what your robo likes to do.
I have another setup here which is a bit nicer with more to do, but still very similar I'm afraid.

Definitely put a lid on your list of things to do! You could have uniform 6 inch bedding or a shallower and deeper section, depending on what wheel you have. You might find she's not very good at digging but they do still like to have a go. You could try some shoeboxes or place tunnels down there yourself to encourage her if this is the case. They do like maze houses or ones with different compartments, like the rodipet ones so you could consider one of those if you haven't got something similar.

It won't matter too much how you choose to lay your cage out, but try to visualise the routes the hamster can take around the cage be it above or below ground, and that can help you pick out areas that need improving - if that makes any sense whatsoever. It can take a few tries to get to a setup that your hamster is happiest in so it's okay to make small changes every so often if you want to.

That’s an amazing set up! Lovely. Mine in the Kerry was similar on a smaller scale

and not quite as creative lol. The big cork logs are good for them - something to sit under and climb over and helps fill floor space. Nugget now has a labyrinth house which he absolutely loves. Before that he ignored houses and built a ole of substrate to tunnel diwn into as a house. Labyrinth houses can be a bit expensive but the Tricia Lief one isn’t too expensive and would be good. You have the space for it. I think they work well as submerged houses for a Robo so it sits on the bottom ( so they can’t tunnel under it and get squashed). I then put some substrate inside it so although it rests on the bottom of the cage there is still some substrate inside and still room for a nest as well.
