I think that's a bit small & it is still a bit too tall.

Also too tall! Unless you want to do some diy and make a full level out of wood then I'd go for a hamster cage rather than a rat cage

You will get good value for money at Zooplus. The cages are all quite neutral and easy to change the colour of the base really - either paint it (with pet safe paint) or stick fablon on it. But that's a bit of a faff.

Going the other extreme (ie only just tall enough!) but with a very neutral look - is the perspex tank style cage maxi duna multy. But it's expensive! Personally I prefer barred cages - for the flexibility of enriching the environment and the ventilation and access - but some people prefer the tank style.

I would second the Savic Hamster Plaza - and it has a nice big front opening door. It's a wee bit on the tall side (48cm internal height) but should be fine if you fill the base with substrate almost to the top) and just spot clean.

The wheel is too small (as with almost all cages) so a good replacement is either the 28cm trixie wheel or the 12" Silent runner (Silent runner is a brilliant wheel but expensive, trixie is absolutely fine!)

Again if you don't like the coloured plastic shelf then Ranchhouse cages on ebay sell nice wood shelves in any size you want virtually, with cage fixings.

Second option I'd suggest would be another 100cm cage from Zooplus. Either the Alexander or the Barney. The Barney has a bigger footprint (deeper so sticks out further). They both come with a good wood shelf and good sized houses for nesting. You still need a wheel. Most people paint the wood shelves and houses with plastikote enamel paint (pet-safe and waterproofs them so they're wipe clean). It sounds like a faff but only takes 10 minutes or so - then another coat next day or something.

Delivery from Zooplus is free for a cage - can take between 2 and 7 days (seems to depend on what day of the week you order - ie just before a week-end is likely to take longer). If you get a wheel from Zooplus as well (or other items) at the same time as the cage then those items also qualify for free delivery. The Barney is very good value. More floor space than all the other 100cm cages and not expensive - plus it comes with a good house for nesting. I have that for our Syrian but if I was getting a cage now I'd get the Savic Plaza for the big front door! Helps with interaction, taming and using the roof to attach things to.

This is the basic Trixie wheel mentioned - pot luck as to which colour comes

https://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/small..._wheels/174195

They also do this excellent wood wheel, which is silent and has a cork running surface (good for hamsters' feet) and a neutral colour! The whole thing needs plastikoting really though as hammies do tend to pee in the wheel sometimes.

https://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/small..._wheels/609617

And this is the Silent runner - also totally silent and can be attached to the bars with attachment plates - it is very safe and stable either on its stand or attached to the bars. But only comes in orange and is expensive. The attachment plates cost another £5 ish as well.

https://sugarglidershop.co.uk/store/...r%20Wheel%2012

Those seem to be the three most popular wheels for Syrians - wodent wheels are hard to come by now and the silent runner is better (spins really well). There are other wheels but not all of them are safe.

If you're thinking of value for money/cost the Barney from Zooplus is probably the best - less than £50 and nothing to buy except a wheel (plus substrate and toys but you can improvise/make toys). And a pot of plastikote or two (£4). I use the clear one usually as I like the look of the light wood but it comes in all different colours.

The Alexander probably next - again just needs a wheel and toys. It comes with three houses and a racetrack of shelving - almost a full second level. The long house that fits in the base is popular for nesting. One of the two smaller houses has a window that isn't safe for a syrian (they can get jammed in it) but easy enough to block the window off or just not use that house.

I think the Savic Plaza is the best cage really - but as well as the price it needs a good house (to build a big nest in and somewhere dark to retreat to) as well as a wheel and toys and possibly replacing the shelf if you're not keen on it (or you could buy a big hemp mat from zooplus and cover it up! It comes as a large piece and you cut pieces off it. I put a piece on top of our hammy's house roof in the winter for insulation.

On the other hand you could easily make a house out of a shoebox (cut the base out and a hole for a door and use the lid as a lift-off roof/second shelf.

If you have space to go bigger and like tank style cages, there is the detolf which is great value and can make an amazing habitat with a lot of varieyt and enrichment. Needs a bit of diy to make a lid. It's a glass cabinet from Ikea you tip on its side and leave the door off. Then make two lids out of strips of wood with mesh stapled to it (normal stapler is fine). DIY stores can cut the wood to the size you want and you then just need little corner brackets to screw on to keep the pieces togher or just bang a couple of nails in. Best value for money in the tank style probably! Wheel height is limited - the trixie wheels would fit but the silent runner wouldn't.

https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/...-art-10119206/

Some people make a room feature of them and have them on top of kallax units - with storage underneath. Which would add to the cost (unless you already have one!). It also fits well on top of the long malm chest of drawers.

https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=ha...w=1138&bih=503

Or if you have a bigger budget and want a really neutral look - theres the Living World Eco habitat - gives a lot of floor space. The medium size is popular (just over 100cm) - the large is amazing - but deep so you need plenty of space. A bit of diy needed there also though as the roof vents are 2cm and the lid needs meshing to prevent escapes (and they can get up there!)

Looks like it's not in stock at the moment but you can get it elsewhere

https://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/small...r_cages/348156

I wouldn't get a tall cage though. Even with a full level - hamsters are ground dwellers really and they do much better with more floor space (for digging, burying things etc) than height - they aren't good climbers - they will climb and drop and hurt themselves.
