Exclamation Need some Bedding advice

Hey,
I'm really trying to make a decision about what bedding to use in my cage.

Currently thinking about using carefresh only its kind of pricey. My idea was to put paper pellets on the bottom off the cage to help with the smell and then add a lot of carefresh on top. What do you guys think I should use (Layers are fine, I don't really care if I have to get 3 different types of bedding, I just want the best for my hamster)

I have a separate digging area, where the bedding can be higher. What bedding should I use for this area? because I don't want the tunnels to collapse (I saw some people using hay between the bedding for stability dos this work and is it safe for her eyes).

Any suggestions for bedding will be helpful!

(Sorry if my English is bad! I come from Europe and languages are not my best feature )

Hi, I'm from England and we can get big bales of recycled paper bedding. it's sold for horses and other smaller pets too. I give my hamsters white toilet paper torn into strips for something softer to sleep on.

Which part of Europe are you in? Zooplus sell hemp bedding in bulk which works out cheaper than Carefresh. You don't want to be putting something on the base to soak up odours - just use about 6" or more of substrate and a potty litter tray with chinchilla bathing sand in it. My cage stays clean and dry and our hammy pees in his potty You have to put the potty in the right place for them to use it (ie where they have chosen to pee. If they pee in their house then give them a bigger house (eg cardboard shoe box) and put the potty inside the house (ie pop the house over current nesting area).

I would recommend hemp from zooplus too, they do deliver to most parts of Europe I think, if you can get it the Hugro brand is the best quality, not the cheapest but still reasonable.
Just that & lots of shredded plain white toilet tissue for nesting would work fine.

Paper pellets have been known to cause issues if eaten so don't use those. You should be able to find Aspen locally if you can't buy from Zooplus (reptile shops usually sell it) - it works out cheap - I would mix that with Carefresh rather than use it on its own. Makes the Carefresh go further, adds variety and still gives them some soft bedding.

i was thinking of buying some aspen in bulk and i found this online:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/...2Y3VVY1U&psc=1
does anyone know if this is good? do i have to mix it with Carefresh or is this ok to put in the cage just by itself? thanks so much!!

I bought aspen the other week and can't remember if it was that or something similar. Anyway shredded aspen is fine to use, it ranges from okay to quite dusty though so I'd certainly mix it in with something else. Apart from the dust, paper bedding is softer for them, some aspen can be a bit scratchy I've found. Personally I prefer megazorb, fitch and clean & cozy to carefresh but they're all relatively similar.

I use a mix of carefresh, timothy hay, aspen, and kaytee soft granules for my burrow zone. my syrian isn't much of a tunneler but she definitely loves a good burrow nap.
