Default Hamster cage suitable?

I'm a first time hamster owner and i'm having a bit of trouble. I already purchased the Ferplast Hamsterville cage but now i'm wondering if it would be better for a syrian or dwarf hamster. I had every intention of removing the first and third levels to allow for more room. But i am still not sure if the cage would have enough room for a syrian hamster

Personally I don’t think it’s that suitable for either - it is on the small side. Don’t know if a Syrian wheel would fit but if it did it would take up the majority of the floorspace - so definitely not big enough for a Syrian. Dwarf hamsters also do better with more floorspace and less height. Is there any way you can return it to get something else?
With keeping a hamster in there you’d definitely need to break up the height so keeping the levels in would be for the best.

That cage is so annoying! It looks lovely and is such a great design but the size is all wrong! Mainly it is that it is only 34cm deep which doesn't give enough floor space especially as it's only 60cm long. It isn't really suitable for a Syrian - it's such a shame that people get sold these cages - pet shops just do it for profit and don't really know anything about hamsters!

The cage may be suitable for a dwarf hamster if there was a full level in it instead of the shelves - it's still not very deep but the extra level may help.

I would get another cage and keep the Hamsterville as a play cage - eg for when you need to clean or do somehting in the main cage - somewhere to put the hamster. But it isn't a cheap cage so you could look at trying to return it for a refund maybe if you get another cage set up first.

The Alaska, Barney and Alexander on Zooplus are all good cages for Syrians and a Syrian would be very happy and able to have normal behaviours in any of those. The Wood shelves and houses in the Barney and Alexander could do with painting with petsafe Plastikote though which is an added chore. The Alaska needs a house adding. There is also the Savic Hamster Plaza which is a good cage (needs a lot of bedding in as it's quite tall but not excessively so).

If that Hamsterville cage was 80 x 50 cm it would be a fantastic cage.

If you haven't got the hamster yet and are trying to decide on a syrian or dwarf - then I would send the cage back for a refund, and get the Alexander or Savic Plaza cage and a Syrian If you haven't had much experience with hamsters yet. Or if you don't have the space for those cages, then the Alaska or the Hamster Heaven (both have nice big front doors for easy access and interaction with the Hamster). But the Hamster heaven colourful plastic contents are all a bit useless - and end up having to be taken out usually - so if you get that it's best used without the penthous and tubes (they provide caps to block the holes if you remove the tubes) and just use the one shelf - the solid one and then get a Syrian sized wheel and some kind of house.

Forgot to link the Savic Plaza cage

All cages come with a tiny wheel that is only suitable for a small dwarf hamster. Syrians need a 8" to 12" diameter wheel. Some Syrians are bigger than others - most people go for an 11" wheel as they run easier in a bigger wheel - but the main thing is the wheel is big enough for them to run with a straight back or they can get back problems and pain.

The 11" Trixie wheel is a good basic option

I really wouldn't recommend it as suitable for a dwarf even with a full level in tbh.

I agree with that Cypher - I wouldn't put our Robo in it - I'm aware that there are different opinions on smaller cages for dwarf hamsters sometimes (depending on their personality) but 34cm is still too narrow really.
