Best container for sandpit?
Hi, We got a new ham last week after Ginger passed away after a stroke ☹️ We had her 2yrs 1 month so she was a good age. Anyway Fungus loves her sandpit, we use a ceramic tub from £ shop but it's only about 1 inch high and she's losing all her sand, what do all you hammy lovers use?

Re: Best container for sandpit?
Yes the low containers can be a problem. I use two sand pits, one is a plastic fish bowl jar also from £ shop as it’s deeper and harder to kick out since it’s a sphere (ikea also do a glass one). I use a rabbit bowl or deeper glass bowl for the other.
I’ve used wooden boxes (ebay - pine open top wooden box) one of the deeper versions before with no problem, that’s more fun for syrians as it’s more like a dig box than a sand bath.

Re: Best container for sandpit?
I have converted one of these food boxes from IKEA that I had lying around as the sand pit. I kind of have it half buried in the substrate with a bendy to help get in/out (not that she ever uses it as a ladder). But what I have noticed is that it doesn't really seem to help much since Gaby always likes to walk out of the sand bath completely covered in sand and shakes it off quite far away from the bath! So the other day when I had to move her cage and emptied out all the substrate, I found a layer of sand all over the bottom of the cage. Lol

Re: Best container for sandpit?
I used to use a plastic sputnik house for a sand bath because my hamster liked how it was enclosed with a roof and a bit more private for him. I've also used one of those pine wooden hamster houses with a flat roof and no floor; I just turned it upside down and filled it with sand. He loved that but even with the sides several inches high he still managed to kick sand everywhere! I got up one morning to find little mounds of the stuff surrounding his whole container.
I've seen YouTube videos where people have used glass mason jars tipped on their side with the lid and clasps removed, seems like a good idea as it's fairly enclosed and you could bury it under the substrate to make it like a little cave for her

Re: Best container for sandpit?
Thanks I'll have a look for either a mason jar or something similar to the IKEA food tub, they don't have the same in IKEA UK but I'm sure they'll be something like it

Re: Best container for sandpit?
I have glass jars. The sides are slightly angled, so when they are laid down they are stable. I have deep substrate so my hamsters can walk in easily. A bendy bridge is used as a ramp when the jar is in the playpen. My hamsters are dwarf hamsters, they roll and make a mess with open sand baths.
