Default Rusty Hamster Cage

Hi there.

I am looking for some advice please. My son has a Syrian hamster. I have noticed though this morning that the cage has lost some of its coating on the top bars and is beginning to rust.

Is it time for a new cage - he's only had it for 3 months!

The cage he's got at the moment is the Rosewood Pico XL which is about 50cm long and 36cm wide - we cant go much bigger. Any recommendations please?

Thank you in advance

I would definitely get a new cage, a cage shouldn't be going rusty in that amount of time unless your son's ham has been chewing the bars maybe. If your ham hasn't been chewing then maybe see if you can return it.
Unfortunately that cage is far too small for a Syrian hamster, you really can't get the things they need like a good sized house, a large wheel (10-12" for a full grown Syrian) plus room for toys & generally moving around.
Would you have room for something like the hamster heaven? It's about the smallest size I would suggest for a Syrian but still not a bad cage if you're short on space. Best used without the tubes & penthouse though.

Hi cypher
Thank you so much for your reply.
I am in the process of contacting Rosewood and Pets At Home about the cage and will see what response I get!
The Hamster Heaven looks a really nice cage Why is it best to use without the tubes and penthouse?

Given the chance hams will often tend to nest, store food & pee all in the tubes or penthouse & as you can probably imagine that gets very unhealthy very quickly!
It's far better to just use the basic cage & provide them with a good house to nest in.

Agree with Cypher - that cage is too tall and small floor area and there are much better cages. The Alaska on Zooplus is a good cage for a Syrian and cheaper than the Hamster Heaven Plus no need to worry about removing all the tubes and platforms (which are useless, break, lead to escapes and hammies block themselves in and pee in the tubes!). The Hamster heaven cage itself is lovely but you end up paying for all the useless colourful plastic stuff! I had one of the shelves and it isn't flat so pee runs down it and the little houses are far too small).

The Alaska may look a bit plain and boring but you can put what you want in it It needs a house and a wheel adding. The little white cat house on the shelf needs taking out as the holes are a bit small for a Syrian - they can get stuck - and it's no good as a house. They do best with a good sized house that is open underneath and sat on top of the substrate - so they can bury their hoards under their nest and burrow down when it's cold - keeps them happy You'd find you'd need to do clean outs much less often with a cage like the Alaska or Hamster Heaven as well. The key is to fill the base with substrate (which uses up a lot of first but then later you don't need to replace much) and use a litter tray. You can get plastic corner litter trays quite cheap and put chinchilla bathing sand in it. Hamsters will use a litter tray if it's provided (and if you put it in the area of cage they choose to pee which is usually a corner of the cage) and then the rest of the cage and house stays clean and dry. Hence you just need to "spot clean" now and then - take a handful of soiled substrate out and replace it with another handful and mix it in a bit.

The Rosewood cage has an enclosed plastic house right at the top and no doubt your hamster ends up peeing in the house as it's a long way down to the bottom of the cage to the substrate. Which means the house needs cleaning out a lot which stresses the hamster. They hate their nest and hoard being disturbed and I tend to leave those for a very long time unless they're pee'd in.

Syrians need a good sized house to build a big nest in so they keep warm in the winter - a cardboard tissue box or shoe box would do with a hole cut for a door.

It's better to move him now before he gets old and can't manage the ramps. When they're older they tend to do everything at floor level when their legs get stiff, so they need more floor area in the base then and ideally all the time.

Generally with Syrians they need a lot of ground floor space and less height (because they are ground dwellers basically and not good at climbing - they tend to let go and drop if they climb and can hurt themselves). But enough height to fit an 11" wheel which they need to run with a straight back.

A good basic starter package is the Alaska cage and Trixie 28cm wheel and at least 3 to 4 inches deep of substrate.

If the pet shop sold you fluffy bedding then bin that! It's very dangerous - best nesting material is plain white toilet paper torn into strips. They sometimes pouch it to take to their nests and can make lovely nests with it - our last one wove himself a kind of coccoon! Just a pile of it somewhere in the cage and they take what they need - they like to make the nest themselves.

Hope that helps! The Hamster heaven is also a lovely cage and you can sometimes find second hand ones on ebay or gumtree but the Alaska is very good value (although apparently can be fiddly to put together - on the plus side it also folds flat for storage when not needed).

If you've only had the Rosewood Pico for 3 months then I'd take it back to the pet shop where you bought it and ask for a refund. If they'll only do an exchange and they have the Hamster Heaven that would be a good way to do it. But better to set it up as an empty cage without the tubes and penthouse (it comes with caps to block the external tubes off) and just leave one of the shelves in (the solid one) then there's space for the wheel as well.

Thank you for your replies.

I am looking at the Hamster Heaven and Alaska at the moment. Just may mean I have to think of somewhere else to place the cage!

I thought going up and down the levels of the cage was good exercise for him - but maybe not then
