Default Best substrate for a smelly boy!

My boris seems to smell! He doesn’t have a ‘pee’ place he just seems to go where ever! Is this normal! I’m using carefresh at the moment I clean monthly sometimes longer and do spot cleaning but it’s very difficult when he does smell! He is fine in himself and happy go Lucky but it’s just the pee/ musty smell.

Any ideas what could work?

For particularly smelly hams, I’d place an open box/container of baking soda outside the cage. This helps to absorb odors which can stop the smell from traveling throughout your room. You can always get pet-safe oil diffusers as well.

For bedding types, you could always switch the bedding in his regular pee areas (if you’re able to find them!) to aspen wood pellets, aspen, or sand. Changing it out regularly helps quite a bit.
Best wishes

You could try lining the base with wood pellets then Carefresh on top. I’ve heard this does a good job for guinea pigs which are much smellier. As for bedding Carefresh is already good at absorbing odour so not convinced changing that would help - maybe get something cheaper though for more frequent clean outs though (fitch is similar to carefresh).

I currently use aubiose for my hamsters and it has great odour control!! It’s quite inexpensive as you buy it in large bales and it lasts a long time. I then just use carefresh in their houses to be more cozy 😂 as I find carefresh doesn’t have great odour control. hope this helps
