First Hamster Cage
Hello! This is my first hamster ever.
I used to own genie pigs.
I also have been looking stuff up on how to care for hamsters and I wanted to know if this cage set up is safe for the hamster?
I have not named him yet. I plan on naming him.
The cage is 12 w 25 L 12 h. (Inches)
Bar spaces are 1/2 inch.
He has not been climbing that much. Yet he did a bit. Is that okay?
Are bar cages in general okay? Should I get a different cage later on?
He is falling a lot when he climbs on the bars even though he isn’t always on them. He has gone on his wheel. He seems okay.

Re: First Hamster Cage
Barred cages are fine but the spacing should never be more than 1cm which is a bit less than you have at the moment.
Your cage is also too small, ideally you want something around 100x50cm for a Syrian ham (that's about 40x20") it also needs to be tall enough for a big enough wheel, a fully grown Syrian will need at least a 10" & possibly a 12" wheel which wouldn't fit into a cage the size you have now allowing for substrate underneath.
If your ham is still a baby then your cage will be ok for a little while although I would be a bit worried about the bar spacing, put as much substrate as you possibly can in the base, ideally you want around 15-20cm but just do what you can for now.

Re: First Hamster Cage
I am planning on getting a bigger cage and wheel in the future.
I was just worried that a cage with bars was a bad idea.
I will add mesh or something to make bar spaces smaller in the future.
Thank you for the help!
