Default Alaska Cage or IKEA SAMLA 130L?

I’m planning on getting a new cage but i’m in a dilemma of whether I should get the Alaska cage or make a SAMLA bin cage. The Alaska is definitely bigger but it has bars which i don’t want my hamster to chew on and definitely won’t want him to climb. The ikea is smaller but doesn’t have much risk in injury. Any opinions and suggestions?

A hamster won't get hurt in an Alaska if you set it up properly with plenty of substrate and levels. Just make sure any hard toys are placed under a level, that way if the hamster does happen to climb and fall they will land on soft substrate. I'd go for the Alaska because it's bigger and the option to add in levels increases the hamster's space even more

Is it for a Syrian or a dwarf hamster?

It’s for my dwarf, but I want to make the cage syrian friendly as well in the case where he passes and I choose to adopt a syrian

I wouldn't recommend an Alaska cage for a dwarf ham if you mean a Russian, I have used it for Chinese but they are much more agile & you can use hammocks with them as they rarely if ever chew fabric, it is possible to make a taller cage safe but it really isn't that easy so I would go for another option. The Samla isn't that big especially as the sides slope but it could just about be ok for a Russian.

My current dwarf was given to me because of accidental breeding and they wanted to ‘release them into the wild’ >_< so I’m not sure but strongly leaning towards the possibility that he’s a hybrid. My cage right now has no bars except for the top opening, so the only experience i’ve had with barred cages was when he was in the old and small cage. He’s quite the climber and I won’t be surprised if he decided to chew it. Reason i’m not jumping for the Alaska is not only cus of the injury risk it poses but also the fact that it’s more expensive.

If cost is an issue as well then the 78cm samla bin made into a bin cage could be a good option A lower cage like the Hamster Heaven might be ok too - there are often used ones on ebay. But they're better without the tubes and penthouse (there are caps to block them off).

I would get the Alaska it really isn’t that tall. I think the same height as the barney cage. I used corner shelves on each side connected by a bridge then something like a hammock (rope one or similar) to break any falls in the centre part of the cage.
Definitely better especially if you’re wanting it to be suitable for a Syrian in the future too
