Alternative Paper Based Bedding Options
So earlier this week I was going to order a bag of 20kg Fitch however they are out of stock. And the only Fitch that is available is the 10kg bag which I’m considering getting as I need some more substrate as I used all that I had left setting up Maples bin cage. But started wondering if there are any other options for paper based bedding available as the 10kg bag is a little expensive compared to the price of the 20kg.
So I have been looking online at other options of bulk/size paper based bedding ...
I did find tea-bag bedding however I don’t think this is safe although stating that it 100% paper. Especially as tea bags don’t breakdown in water and knowing that polymer/plastic fibres are sometimes added to the paper to stop the bag breaking down in water. So I assume this would make it unsafe to use?
If you have any other suggestion of any other paper based bedding I would greatly appreciate it. Preferably available in large/bulk bag which is fairly inexpensive? And dust free.
As I need something to tie me over until the 20kg bags are back in stock (I have emailed Fitch to see if they knew when the 20kg bags would be back in stock but haven’t had a reply yet).
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Alternative Paper Based Bedding Options
What a shame SKB. Just had a look. When I ordered late last year, there was a new option, 15kgs in a cardboard box. Makes for better storage but I see that isn't even an option now.
Hope you get an answer soon. Maybe if they know someone wants some, they will create the 20kg one. After all, it is all on site.

Re: Alternative Paper Based Bedding Options
The only paper based substrate I can think of that comes in quite large bags is the Kaytree clean & cosy on Amazon I think that still works out more expensive than buying the 10kg bag of Fitch, most of what you pay for fitch is the delivery cost so 10kg does seem expensive compared to the 20kg bag although I find it lasts me ages even with three hams but then I don't do frequent full cage cleans.
I tend to have the same doubts about the teabag substrate tbh & don't know of anyone on here who has experience of using it.
The other option for bulk substrate is megazorb but that's wood pulp & really dusty!

Re: Alternative Paper Based Bedding Options
Thank you Coco61, cypher and fluffagrams for your help and suggestions.
Fluffagrams - have you used either the green mile or Finacard bedding? I have considered both of these but am slightly put of due to the fact they are cardboard as I worried that it won’t be soft for Maple to burrow in.
I am starting to consider that I might just buy a 10kg bag of Fitch as I can’t find anything that is similar and such a great price and Maple is loving it to! Just a shame I can’t get a 20kg bag though. I thought I was lucky to find one on eBay however it over a 3hr drive away to collect just as far as Fitch themselves!

Re: Alternative Paper Based Bedding Options
I’ve tried Finacard and it was softer than I thought it would be and although it’s not quite as soft as I remember Fitch used to be it was certainly softer than the last lot of Fitch I had ordered.
I’ve not tried Green Mile but I know that Vectis was thinking of giving it a try. I usually use Megazorb, which is soft and holds up to tunnelling well but some people find that it can be a bit dusty.

Re: Alternative Paper Based Bedding Options
Thank you fluffagrams, I will consider trying these beddings in the future, as sometimes I do want a different look to my cage.
I did in the end up decideding to get the 10kg bag of Fitch - and was quite pleased as the bag I got is a very good batch very soft and fairly little dust. Alatjough setting up my DIY cage for Maple playtime, I did uses up most of the 10kg bag up and have enough for a spot clean of the DIY cage when she moves in - hopefully then they will have the 20kg bag back in stock.
