Talking Wheels - Traditional or Flying Saucer

Hi guys!

Just about to get a new wheel for my to-be Syrian. I know that I should try to go for the largest that my cage will fit - but I'm in a dilemma between a flying saucer type, or the traditional wheel.

Flying saucers seem to take up less space (height), but are there any issues for the hamster? I guess they're running to one side, rather than straight, so keen to hear thoughts.

TIA

Both wheels allow your hamster to run in an auteur position. I personally like to use traditional wheels rather than flying saucers as I just find them cheaper and easier to find in my area. I think both wheels are great and provide the same thing, for your hamster to run in a nature position. But keep in mind that you will need a very large saucer for a Syrian! If you can, offer both wheels so your ham can chooses!

Upright wheels are best, flying saucers cause them to run at a weird angle, ok for occasional use but not ideal for a main wheel plus they take up a huge amount of floor space in the cage which could be put to much better use.

I would use an upright wheel, as I agree with what cyphers says.

Being a first-time hamster owner (Syrian), I’m certainly not an expert — but I can report that my little Chiclet loves the upright wheel and has had absolutely no enthusiasm for the saucer type. She also tends to have trouble keeping her balance on the saucer wheel. I still do keep the saucer in her playpen in case she does show more of an interest in it at some point, but I’ll always be keeping an upright wheel in her cage.

Forgot to link to this thread if you're undecided which upright wheel to get.

Some hamsters seem to find the Flying Saucers awkward to use but some of my smaller Chinese and my Robo seem to prefer them. The Saucers need less height in the cage but they can take up more floor space and with a Syrian you'd probably need to be looking at the large one which is about 12 inches or so.

That's a good point - for Syrians an upright wheel is invariably the best thing as a main wheel, but often dwarf hamsters prefer a saucer wheel (or both!). Even with a 12" flying saucer, Syrians can run at a funny angle on it.
