Switching from the Borneo to a Detolf?
At the start of this year I picked up a very lovely Syrian hamster girl, named Ray. The story in bulletpoints below:
-She was housed inside a Barney from Zooplus.
-Ray quickly became tame, so after a week of two she was allowed to play inside the playpen.
-She doesn't bite and climbs on your hand.
-After a month or three she started to become restless inside the barney, so i tried giving her more floor time.
-This helped, for a bit.
-After the first succes with a Borneo XL cage (120 by 60 cm) I decided to order another one and some new toys/big silent spinner for Ray.
-She absolutely loves the space she has. In the beginning she had about 10 inch of bedding all over the cage.
-Then, she started to become restless again. She started to barchew and even chewing a corner of the Borneo! I blocked all the corners with homes and a sandbath. Even gave her an extra spare wheel.
-I revamped her cage, added way more substrate. (It's around 16 inch now)
Changed some toys, I also do scatterfeeding with her. She got a digging box filled with a different substrate for enrichment.
-This helps for about a week or two, then she starts to get frustrated again.
So...now I am wondering about something. She seems to love digging, would she be happier in my Detolf? Its around the same size considering floorspace as the Borneo. With a hamsterscaping type of setup?
Or does anybody have some more tips?

Have you tried Glass Aquariums? or Terrariums.
Though I shouldn't compare Dwarves to Syrians but my Dwarves are happy in a Terrarium and the only chewer around here would be Franc chewing on his wheel instead of the wooden chews.

I don't have te space for an aquarium. But I do have the Detolf I could use for her, instead of the dwarf that now lives in it.

Re: Switching from the Borneo to a Detolf?
Are the photos of your current set up? It does look quite empty for such a big cage, you could make better use of the height by making some free standing shelves, it's useful to have the wheel on a shelf & gives you more room for substrate & a digging or sleeping area underneath, you could use things like bendy bridges & tubes to give her more areas to explore & places to hide things.
As long as the base is full to the top with substrate that should be enough for her to dig in really & I'm not sure that you'd have that much more space for substrate allowing for the height of the wheel & things that need to go on top in the detolf.
She may be happier in a tank style cage like that but I do think you could try adding a lot more to the cage you have to see if she'll be happy with that.
Those hanging ladders are dangerous btw so I would remove those.

Re: Switching from the Borneo to a Detolf?
One picture was from when I was still arranging her cage, but she was put in so she could explore. The other one was from an older setup. I had a few tubes buried under her substrate, and still have, so she also has those.
I will have to wait until August, but I think I am moving her in to the Detolf. I would like to give her more interesting things to hide in and to explore. Maybe driftwood branches and cork tubes?
