Default Ikea Billy Cage

I’m thinking of making a Billy bookcase cage for my Syrian hamster. Has anyone ever had a hamster chew out of one of these? What are people’s thoughts on this configuration?

It's not an ideal set up. I know someone who gave up with theirs due to the smell. It's impossible to seal the shelf gaps and wee leaks in to the chipboard and causes it to swell and it is difficult to clean too.
The detoft glass one is popular but not without it's drawbacks. For the cost of making these you can get a ready made hamster cage of a decent size and accessorise it too.

Thanks. Yes, I was thinking all the same things. The board isn’t ideal material for hamsters I wouldn’t have thought. We have a new hamster in a relatively small starter cage and we are looking for something bigger for when he settles down.

I'm not sure I agree with the part of the detolf cage being more expensive than a ready made hamster cage. The detolf worked out significantly cheaper for me for the same floor space compared to other cages. But then again, I suppose that could be because I don't use a lid.

I'm not sure if you've already seen this video, but it kind does touch on the addressing the smell and the sealing of the cage.
IKEA Billy cage
Double Billy Cage
Cleaning.

There are several other videos I've seen, but I usually find this channel helpful for my detolf.

Thanks. I’ll check it out. And yes, I agree with your point on cost.

I don't think it is cheaper than to buy pinewood and mesh and get it cut to size.
The biggest advantage is you don't have treat the floor as the minimum with painting.
