Default Aquarium Skull?

A while ago, got an aquarium skull thing for my hamster's fantasy themed cage. When I soaked it, found out it smelled like spray paint... remembered it and wanted to ask, is it safe?? If it was supposed to be in the water with fish, shouldn't it be safe to include?

I don't think I'd use it if smells of paint. If your hammy chewed it it might be toxic.

I wouldn't use it if it smells at all & as souffle says it's possible it may be toxic.

What I learned in school, having Chemistry was the stuff that smell usually isn't the worst, but that don't smell by anything. Well, it is suitable for waterliving organisms, which are more sensitive towards toxines than landliving organisms. The chewing hazard would be fa greater than any eventual toxicity, because it wasn't made for chewing.
But if you are in doubt, don't use it.

I wouldn't recommend using this inside your hamsters cage - things that smell very strongly of paint should be avoided especially as it could be really overwhelming to hamsters. Also I would be careful of using things that are specifically designed for hamsters without knowing what material the product is made of as these items might be toxic if chewed on and ingested.

For some aromatic compounds this is true however their are other aromatic compounds which smell which aren't safe - such as bleach and compounds which contain the -phenol group. The best way to tell for certain safety is knowing the molecular formula to see which group the compound belongs in.
