A lot depends on the individual hamster, I've had some Chinese & Russian love larger cages while others are happier in a slightly smaller space, they do have lots of energy & can use a fair bit of space so I think that's true to some extent.

Yeah I mean I'd say that too just in terms of floor space, I'd probably still edge on the minimum of 80x50. But toys and houses for Syrians do take up a big chunk of that because they usually need to be so much bigger than toys for dwarves, so I tend to think you should allow a bit of extra space to account for that
