The larger bin looks fine

I can't quite see how they are joined or where the access is. The suggestion I'd seen for joining them was to cut the ends of both bins and weld them together with hot glue - but I guess that wouldn't work with separate sized bins. Assume you have things to add still but a bit less open space might go down well - eg more hidey places like an egg box with a hole cut in or a tissue box and a cardboard tunnel or something.

Is it escape-proof like that? Also the cut edge on the larger bin might be a bit sharp if they did manage to escape but could maybe just be sanded at the edges or something.

The first photo on this link shows two same size ones joined together. How big is the larger bin as it doesn't look too small.

Agree that you do need to put more things in there, bendy bridges are good to climb on & hide under, small cardboard boxes & tubes would be good too, mine love the egg boxes, I usually put some substrate in then hide some food or treats in there for them.
You could use a cardboard box to make a bigger house too.
It's hard to tell from the photo but what size wheel do you have? It looks a little small but not sure.

I used duct tape to join it, the access is the window I carved into the side of the original bin when I first made it (I removed the screen) and yes, I have been intending to put more playthings in there for him to use (did you see the little popsicle-stick swing? He loves sleeping under that) My wheel is 12in. Unfortunately, where I live the egg cartons are made of sharp plastic and not cardboard. I can make some cardboard hideouts soon.

I joined them with duct tape and some glue, and the access is a large hole I cut in the original bin that used to be for the side window. I am still intending to put things inside like more hidey-holes. I made certain it was escape proof, but I only found the larger bin now so that couldn’t have happened anyway. The larger bin was 1ft by 2ft but as I said I only found the bin now, and anyway Ares has more space this way.

Ok so the bins are attached together but there's no access between the two bins? How big is the larger bin? It might be ok on it's own.

The access sounds fine, keep an eye on the duct tape though just in case anything shows signs of coming apart!
Shame about the egg boxes but I'm sure you'll find other things.
Have you measured your wheel?

Most certainly have! The opening of the wheel is 11 1/2 in diameter but the running space itself is 12in (the wheel is sort of curved inward). I folded back a paper bag and flattened one side so he can get in and he’s chewing away at it right now. I’m also making a popsicle-stick platform for him. I covered the exposed bits of duct tape with some spare plastic so there aren’t any issues with it.

No, there is access, I cut a section out of the side of the original bin before attaching it. The larger bin is 1ft by 2ft, but I don’t want to use it because it’ll bother me, knowing that he has a little less space than he’d like. I just want to give him as much space as possible, and he has plenty of it now. The join is secure anyway, so I’m sure he’s better off now.
