Re: Bin cage panic
Not sure if you've seen this, but this pet shop in the Philippines sells the Zoozone Which is ideal. The top bars need meshing that's all - because the bar spacing is too wide. Good for either a syrian or a dwarf hamster.
Houses & Habitats - Pet Warehouse | Philippines
If it's not near you maybe they deliver? I think it works out the equivalent of £45 in Uk money - not sure if that is in budget. Or look out in adverts for a second hand fish tank. They are often grungy but if cleaned up make a good hamster tank and you just need to make a lid.

It does look like it is big enough, but it’s not in budget-and you’re forgetting that I have TWO hams-which would make it more like £90, and even then there's the issue of the shipping, and as nice as the cage is, buying two of them would go far beyond my budget. I can make a couple of bin cages for £14, and that would be double the space of the Zoozone. Quick question though, the cages won't be done until Thursday. Will my hamsters be alright in the small cages they have now? Also, I checked it out and it’s out of stock so I couldn’t get it even if I had the money.

Re: Bin cage panic
Oh yes good point. Ok so I would think you might best making a diy cage of some kind to get something big enough. And meanwhile they would be ok in the smaller cages as long as they had out of cage time regularly. The thinking being that a cage change is stressful for them so best if only done once - and that two connected small bins isn't as ideal as a larger space.
There are a lot of diy cage ideas on youtube - using an old coffee table or buying melamine and mesh from a hardware store eg. Does that sound like a possibility? If that isn't an option I believe there is a way you can join two smaller bins to make one larger one by cutting the long sides off the bins and sticking them together - that would give you a bin approximately 20 inches by 24 inches (50cm by 60cm) which still isn't that big but a lot better. I think you sit the edge of one bin just inside the other, after cutting the long ends off, and hot glue them together and then tape the join on the outside to make it secure.

Actually, that’s what I was going to do from the start. Cut the bins and join them. Also, can you give me any advice on how to help Ares and Hera be more comfortable with their upgraded cage?

Re: Bin cage panic
To help them with the change don't clean for a couple of weeks before or after other than spot cleaning pee, don't clean wheels or toys or substrate so everything retains their scent.
If you can arrange things in a similar layout that will help too, then just give them a little while to settle in without too much interference, once you've don't the swap don't move things around in the cage unless something really issn't working, they should be fine then.

Okay, thanks. Ares’s cage will be done by tomorrow, but because of lack of supplies and not enough time, Hera’s might not be finished until next week. Will she be alright until then? I’m going to try to get materials as soon as possible to work on the joined bin, but she’ll have to stay in the bin she has now until next week at the latest. Is she going to be okay until I can fix the bins for her?

I'm sure she'll be ok for a while longer.

Re: Bin cage panic
I’ve completed Ares’s cage. He’s now exploring the new space and I’d say he seems pretty happy! What are your thoughts on the expansion? The second bin is a bit lopsided, but it’s an improvement and my boy’s happy with the extra room. Hera’s cage will be done in a while, but Ares seems to approve of his new abode. The joined bins actually ended up being MORE than 480 sq in-I got a bin slightly bigger than the first to make sure it would fit! He’s not the only one happy about the new cage, I can finally have some peace of mind knowing that he’s in a spacious cage better suited for him than the tiny, congested barred cage he used to live in with his brothers at his previous home. If you look closely, you can see him in the expansion, by the food bowl. He seems to like it and he’s probably sleeping in the tube hideout right now.
