Default Bookcase cages

Hi

I have 3 hammies - a syrian and 2 robos. My hamsters live in my living room and are all in separate cages (the robos were fighting so I had to separate them). I've recently moved into a smaller house and don't have the space for the 3 cages anymore. I've been thinking of a way to house them and my only option in stackable cages.

I was originally looking at turning the Ikea Kallax into cages and giving them a level each. This would give them each a cage 147cm x 39cm x 33xm. However the only place I could put a unit this size would be under my TV. I've read that you shouldn't keep hamsters near a TV as it stresses them out so that idea won't work.

My only other option is to turn a bookcase into cages. I was thinking about buying a Billy bookcase (80x28x202xm) and making a two level cage for my syrian. That would be 80x28x33cm on each level. Would this be enough space for him? Would one level each (80x28x33) by enough for my robos? I've tried looking for deeper bookcases but haven't had any luck.

Also, for people that make cages out of Ikea furniture: how do you hand toys from the ceiling or attach the bottle/wheel to the wall when there are no bars?

All advice is welcome

Hi,

This is something I've also been looking into recently and finding a good bookcase (depth wise) that is in my price range has been quite difficult. I personally feel that as long as your hamsters get out of cage time in a safe play area regularly the size of the bookcase cages should be okay.

Theres some links here which may be helpful for you to read through

DIY Cage - Ikea Regissor Bookcase

IKEA Billy bookcase conversion - upright

The pictures dont show anymore on this thread but the bookcase this user used was only 30cm deep which is only 2cm more than the billy
Project: Syrian cages

For hanging things from the ceiling perhaps you could use these 80mm Stainless Steel Wood Screw Cup Hook - GS Products
im not sure how well they'd work but thought maybe they'd be useful - you'd have to be sure the hamster cant reach them though

Alot of members who have tanks use industrial strength Velcro for their water bottles perhaps this could be an option for the bookcase? Or a free standing water bottle holder could work too

I reckon it could work out well as long as you protect the wood by sealing it and ensure theres enough ventilation. I hope this helped and i'll be interested to see what others say on this thread too as a bookcase diy is high on my future cages list
