Making the switch
Tomorrow, Ares and Hera make the switch to a bin cage. I’ve ultimately decided to ditch the barred cages (couldn’t find any that were big enough!). They’re going to be living in a split 50gallon with a divider.

Re: Making the switch
How are you planning to divide the bin? Making safe dividers that they can't possibly get through is tricky & they may not be comfortable being that close together.
Which country are you in? If you let us know we may be able to make some suggestions for suitable cages.

The hardware store near our house sells bins that have a removable divider. We’re planning to put in the divider and add bedding, a wheel and water bottle plus toys and hiding places on both ends, and the screen top. The divider is thick plastic and they definitely won’t be able to get through it. The country I’m in has absolutely no options for suitable cages, I’ve been looking for months. It’s either a massive tank that I have no idea how to get back home from the pet supplies shop and will cost extra to get tank-compatible supplies, or a teeny-tiny little cage that my hams won’t like at all.

Re: Making the switch
It does sound as though that could be safe but they still may not be happy that close together & will be aware of each other which could be problematic, you might well do better to get them a bin each to be on the safe side.

I know that the hardware store sells sets of 2 bins each that can be attached to each other. I’ll probably get those, they’re 30gallons. Do you think that will be big enough?

Re: Making the switch
Do you know what the dimensions of the bins are?

Yes, it’s a 30 by 15 inch, and it is a bit short, but we have a cover. I cut a large hole in the cover and replaced it with screen, and I did the same thing on the side. They’ve been in the bins for about 2 days now and they’re settling in.

Re: Making the switch
Good to hear they're settling in ok, that's not a bad size, a little small maybe but not by that much.
