Arnold's new diy cage
This is Arnold's new cage I constructed out of mfc board and perspex, I used aquarium sealent on the corners of the wooden sides and is held together with screws and brackets. The cage measures H 20" W 20" L 40" which equals to 800 square inches of floor space. This is not open top, there is a detachable lid its just not shown in the photo.

Re: Arnold's new diy cage
Your cage looks amazing! I don't know how people manage to do DIY ages as I'm really terrible at it myself. Arnold is such a cutie! He looks so adorable sitting by his bowl, he must be a very well mannered hamster since
mine always just sit right in the bowl! Anyway your cage is lovely, Arnold is definitely one lucky ham!

Re: Arnold's new diy cage
Thank you! there is such a huge improvement in his behaviour and general health hes more active and interested and doesn't display any of the bored and depressed behaviours from when he was in his cage from pets at home. I'm annoyed at the lengths I had to go to purely because there's not a single commercial cage with appropriate floor space without completely breaking the bank however this was the best decision I could've made for my Arnold, I'm hoping that people with the space may give this sort of thing a try! I'm so happy with the outcome and Iv'e taken lots of photos of him using all the things in his cage, when I get around to compressing my picture files I'll post them on here too! We're both chuffed to bits. It cost less than £60 to make which is actually pretty good when you look at the living world cages and the huge wooden not so appropriate cages for hams.

Re: Arnold's new diy cage
You did a great job making that cage, it does look nice & I'm sure he must be loving the change.
The only suggestion I would make is to have deeper substrate.

Arnold's home looks awesome, you did a great job.
Just one small point though if I may, just keep an eye on the clear plastic tubes, ickle one may get stuck if his pouches are full. Other than that, its great cage with load of space .

Re: Arnold's new diy cage
Hi what thickness Perspex did you use? I was thinking of doing something similar but wasn’t sure what thickness to use to the weight of substrate wouldn’t make the Perspex bow out.

Re: Arnold's new diy cage
What a cage! Not only is it spacious and enjoyable for the ham but it looks nice to the human eye as well! Just out of curiosity, did you varnish the inside on the wooden parts to protect it from pee? If so what type did you use?
