I would go for the 40 gallon breeder, it's quite a good size with plenty of room for deep substrate & lots of toys/hideouts & large enough wheel.
I wouldn't go for that 50 gallon bin, it does need to be transparent or at least translucent.

Agree - 40 gallon breeder. Or possibly a detolf? You'd need to make lids for that though. The sterilite bin is not very tall to allow for a decent depth of substrate. If you can get a 40 gallon breeder for $40 in the dollar per gallon sale it's a cheaper option than the detolf. If no sale then the detolf is most likely cheaper - but most people stand it on something so that could bump up the cost if you get two kallax units (it does look nice on them and provides useful storage for all sorts underneath). Or a cheaper alternative to stand it on is a couple of budget Lack coffee tables.

for the ikea lid could i just put a lid for a plastic storage bin over the areas with tall objects? Like the wheel and hideouts? With 6 inches of bedding, theres still 8 inches left to climb, like for the other parts of the cage. I just think making a lid is too troublesome for my parents.

And why does the bin need to be clear?

You might be surprised at how good they can be at escaping! Doing without a complete lid is really not worth the risk, it's easy enough to make one with just a wooden frame & some mesh. Some hamsters aren't comfortable with a lot of open space above them either so a lid will help wth that too.

The bin needs to be clear so your ham is exposed to daylight, not bright light but they do have natural body rhythms just like us & need to be aware of day/night cycles.
Also if your bin isn't clear you could really scare your ham if it only sees you suddenly looming over it without any sense of you approaching.

What if i add mesh to the sides? Will that be ok? If not, I will definitely look into making a lid for a detolf, or getting a 40 gallon tank.
