Lightbulb Diy tower for digging

Hi
I just got myself my first hamster, a little girl, last monday. I have already discovered that she is a digger, and my cage is not deep enough (because of the bars), so I can here her scraping the bottom.
I am wondering if i can make a digging tower for her from a tall plastic food container, where I drill entrance- and airholes, and use it as a separate "toy" next to the cage. Perhaps connect it to the cage with some hamster funnels.

You can make a digging box/tower. I would try to fit it inside the cage and have a solid ramp (bendy bridge possibly) for her to get in and out.

What species do you have? Sometimes Russians & Chinese hams will enjoy digging around on the base of the cage even with deep substrate so it may not be that the substrate isn't deep enough as long as the base is full, you could just put a cardboard box in one corner to make a bit of a digging box, a plastic box might get chewed so cardboard would probably be better.I would stick to in cage, trying to add things on to the cage often ends in escapes.

Thanks for your replies and ideas.

She is a winterwhite dwarf hamster.

I think I will try to fit it into the cage

Another alternative with a barred cage is to just attach a strip of cardboard all the way around using cable ties so you can increase the depth of the base, that way you can fit more substrate into the whole cage. It does depend on the overall height of the cage though as you may not have space for a large enough wheel to stand on the substrate that way.
