Default How to make silent runner silent?

Hi!

About a month ago I bought a silent runner from exotic nutrition and after that my nights has become sleepless. The wheel is the most noisiest wheel I've ever heard in this case. When I'm spinning the wheel it doesnt make any sound, would be a dream wheel, but whenever my hamster get on it, no one in the room is not sleeping anymore.

So my question is has anyone had the same problem with the wheel ? Since it was quite expensive I wouldnt want to throw it away and change back to very silent trixie wheel.

I've tried to even remove all the fitch under it and also I had a rock on top of the bottom piece in case it wouldnt be heavy enough to stay stable on the substrate, but nothing hasnt helped.

Hi,

You're lucky your silent spinner moves at all!
I tried three, none of which moved and opted for Trixie wheels, I have two in the current cages and two spare.
I find silent spinners very pricey when there are better and cheaper alternatives out there.
I'm not sure you can get to the ball bearings either? My (newbie) trick would be to oil the ball bearings but it's been a while since I saw one of them so I can't remember the make up of them.

I'm sorry if I'm no help at all, feel free to tell me to go away!

If it's a silent runner (not spinner) from exotic nutrition. Is it put together properly? When I got my first one, I didn't press the front and back panels together firmly enough, meaning there was a gap either side of the little plastic joining strip, and also meaning the wheel had a bit of a scissors action. But it was silent. I have noticed my wheel makes a slight whirring noise when it's on the stand now I've had it quite a while, but it's silent when attached to the bars.

Also do you have all the parts attached (there's a spacer between the wheel and the nut)?

Or it could be yours has faulty ball bearings. I would check it's put together ok and if so send it back for an exchange - they are usually silent! If it's a silent "spinner" though - they aren't silent - still send it back!

If it helps I did a video review of it - at the end are some photos showing how to put it together.

Just noticed you're in the Uk - where did you buy it from?

Have you got it free standing, or have you attached it to the side of the cage?

I found that Mushu’s silemt runner was completely silent when free standing. However, when I attached it to the side of the cage, it mad an unholy racket. That was because I had attached it too low on the bars so that it was knocking against the side of the plastic tray base. The problem was remedied by moving it as far up the bars as it would go so that there is now minimal knocking although there is still a tiny bit of noise.

The company guarantees that the wheel’s mechanism is silent/extremely quiet. They cannot be responsible for noises produced as a result of the wheel not being attached correctly to the cage, or if the cage you have bought is not tall enough. Getting a replacement wheel will not help with this, but attaching the wheel higher or getting a taller cage if that is not possible in your current one, should.

Try spinning the wheel round when it is free standing. You can even have you hamster spin on it free standing while you watch. If it makes very little noise, then it is them way in which it is attached to the cage whic is the problem. If it is still very noisy, then there is a fault with it and you should send it back.

The wheel is standing on the stand and Also the cage is tall enough (65cm).

I was also thinking maybe I should try to build somekind of wooden level under the wheel. This morning when I tried to make sure all the parts were properly i noticed it does make much less noise when its standing on something hard, still need to see how it will go when Daisy will be running on it.

Is it right up against the wall, or very close to it? That may cause the same problem as having it attached to the bars too low as it will be swaying and bumping into the side of the cage.

Hope you've solved it It really should be silent. I've only used mine attached to the cage though. What kind of noise is it? Vibrating? Banging? Or wheel noise (ie the bearings when spinning. Sounds like it might be vibration if it's better standing on something flatter. Some cages have bases that aren't completely flat - mine slopes up to a hump in the middle!

DrropS, I'm having exactly the same problem. It's free standing and not knocking against anything but when Hoshi gets in there it really rattles. He absolutely loves it and spends most of the night in it.

It came fully assembled already so I've been trying to work out whether something needs adjusting but it seems fairly secure. I've tried tightening the bolt but doesn't make much difference. I'm wondering if I should try taking the whole thing apart and putting back together. Is it difficult to do? I'd appreciate any help, as would my upstairs neighbours probably

I've got four silent runners & none of them rattle they really are silent so it may be that it isn't assembled correctly, to double check after reassembling mine I just put it face down on a hard surface & press down firmly all around the rim, you can just spin the stand out of the way so you can press all around, often there's just one or two spots that will click into place when I do that.
They can make a noise moving around if standing on a hard surface so maybe it's that rather than the wheel?
I use dowels or lolly sticks glued to the wooden shelves mine stand on to keep them in place & find a few sheets of toilet paper underneath can help stop them sliding about & making a noise too.
