Safe clear varnish/finish for wooden cage??
Hi everyone! I have a Syrian in a home-built wooden cage. The cage is made from solid Pine and held together with all pocket screws (no glue). I’m looking for some kind of clear finish to safely use on the inside and outside of the wood to help seal the wood and protect it from any liquid/messes and keep it clean. I originally didn’t do this because I was planning on litter training whatever hamster was going to live in the cage so I figured it wouldn’t need protection. While I still plan to litter train, my new Syrian Pippin has been in the cage a little over a week now and has yet to choose a pee corner, so he’s kind of just going everywhere.
Does anyone have any suggestions on a clear finish I can put on the pine wood to help protect it/keep it cleaner (available in the US please!)

Re: Safe clear varnish/finish for wooden cage??
Hello and Welcome to Hamster Central.
I unfortunately don’t know of any pet safe varnishes in the US. A US member might be able to give you a recommendation.
The only thing I could think of if you are unable to find some clear paint is get some clear thin Perspex sheets and attach it to the sides of the cage.
With my girl I provided her with a ceramic dish in her cage with some chinchilla sand which she self taught herself to use as her litter tray.
I hope Pippin is enjoying his new DIY cage.
