I need advice on Syrian Hamster cages...
I am planning to get my boyfriend a Syrian hamster for his 18th birthday in May, and am considering what cage to get.
Sprout's cage was bought many years ago, so I do not know the exact model of it, but this is Skittle's cage...
Criceti 9 Hamster Cage by Ferplast | Pets at Home
It is rather small, but she enjoys it, even though I am having some issues with the wheel.
I am looking at spending about £40 on the cage for my boyfriend's hamster, I was wondering if you all could help me out? We're looking for one without tubes, but a lovely cage just the same....Links and pictures please?
Many thanks

Re: I need advice on Syrian Hamster cages...
That cage is far too small for syrians - the wheel is also too small and dangerous for syrians as they could break their back running on it.
A good cage for syrians is the Savic Cambridge, there are always loads on ebay second hand, they look like this although they can be different colours and are not always listed as a *Savic Cambridge* on ebay so it takes some searching
You can buy them new as well but I think they cost about £50 and pets at home don't sell them any more. The savic hamster heaven is also good but is £65 so a bit too far over your budget? Good luck!

Ahh, thanks very much
So, do you think it would be a good idea to change Skittle's cage in the future?

This is the one I was advised to get. I couldn't find it on the website, but it was £25 from Pets at home. The woman said it was big enough for when it gets full sized, but it would still be better to get some add-on tubes for it at some point. 3 levels including bed, wheel, drinking bottle.
I quite like it!

If Skittle is a syrian then yes - I would change it sometime in the future to a slightly bigger one like the cambridge cage, as I said there are loads on ebay so u might be able to pick up a bargain
It might be ok-ish for dwarves, I still find it a bit small but I think it would be better for dwarfs than syrians

Re: I need advice on Syrian Hamster cages...
i think it's even too small for dwarfs...although it would be ok for my lazy russian. she only leaves her coconut-bed to get food inside so that she can even eat without leaving her bed

Re: I need advice on Syrian Hamster cages...
Thank you all for your advice, I am definately going to purchase a new cage for Skittles in the future, as she is indeed a Syrian.
Also, would her current cage be suitable for any other rodent, as the majority of you believe it would not be suitable for Dwarf hamsters?
Help please

Thanks very much for the link, I'll look into it
Do you know the specific make and model of that cage in particular?
Thanks

Re: I need advice on Syrian Hamster cages...
just a note to say that cage is also far too small for a grown Syrian hamster.
You'd be much better with a Cambridge or similar...

Ok, I'll look into it
I now dispise Pets at Home for being misleading, the cage is described as good for a grown Syrian hamster...horrible people
