Default Is my cage setup good enough?

Getting a Winter White and just wanted to know if this setup is good enough: a 80cm by 35cm fish tank connected (via tubes) to one of those awful CritterTrail things. Is it okay since it's connected? The sq in floor space is about 580 but more towards 570 if being more precise. I know not to put several in a modular so I won't do that; I'm really only looking for advice as this is my first hamster as a not-a-child.

Thanks!

hello fish fin
welcome to HC
congarats on your winter white
your cage sounds fine to me (but I am not the best DIY person in the world.)
just make sure he/she can definitely NOT escape.

(send a post when you get your winter white.want to know its name!)

If you connect cages with tubes make sure they're at an angle that makes it easy for your ham to go through them & that the tubes are wide enough, do take care that there's no way that the tubes can come apart or anything that might allow your ham to escape.
Ideally hams do better in one larger space rather than connected cages but your tank is rather narrow & small to be used alone.
Most importantly think about everything you need to fit in, a large enough wheel & house, sand bath are the basic essential & even those take up a fair bit of space & you will also need room for toys & general enrichment.

If you put the main items your hamster needs in the tank (house/hide for the nest, food, water, wheel, cardboard tube etc. Then the small cage could have additional toys/chewing toys.

I had my Russian dwarf hamster in a bin cage to start with and had tubes at a 45 degree angle to allow access to the playpen. He was ok with the tubes at that angle, but found it difficult if the tubes were too vertical.

The square inches only counts for one area (ie the biggest one) so it's about 433 square inches for the tank Which is ok. As Cypher says, it is a bit narrow, but I think it sounds ok for a dwarf hamster (not for a Syrian with bigger wheel etc) and with the add-on cage it's a bonus. They do prefer one larger area than two smaller ones joined together, but you can see how it goes.

It would be best to have the main hammy things in the one cage/tank. eg wheel, house, food and water bottle - so they don't have to go down the tubes just to access something essential, but go down them because they feel like it. If you find she doesn't use the add on cage when the main things are in the tank, then it might be an idea to think about a slightly bigger tank/cage instead, but see how it goes. 80 x 35 cm isn't a bad size - just a shame it isn't a little bit deeper like 40 to 45 cm.

Thanks for the feedback! I got Bridget today and she seems very pleased with her surroundings. She's about 6 weeks old and right now she's comfortably wrapped up warm in her little house (no fluffy bedding). She spent ages exploring!
