Is this normal/okay??
Hi!
Something has been going on and I don’t know if I should be worried or make any changes.
My Syrian (aka Kevin) is living in a 3,000 sq in. cage. And about 1/3 of it is a flat surface with no substrate. There are toys/hideouts/food and water in all areas of the cage. At first I thought he was living in all areas of the cage equally. But I learned that when I cleaned out his cage. All of the substrate was clean! No hoards, no poop or pee messes. No evidence of tunnels or digging, nothing! He has a sand bath and I find he is a wheel peeer. It appears that he is only living in the flat areas. The areas are all easily acessable and I’m using paper substrate which he has been on his whole life.
Please help!

Re: Is this normal/okay??
Do you know out of what material the flat surface is made?
If it's glass for example it could be quite cold for your hamster to walk on, but if it's wood it should be fine.
As long as you provide your hamster with enough options of substrate or other surfaces to choose from and he doesn't show any symptoms of distress or stress, you should be totally fine.
Can't you find any pee or poo at all?

Do you have a photo of your cage? It's hard to imagine He may well be living in all the areas of the cage but has decided that the wheel is a toilet! Is it in a corner? Or maybe he's just lazy lol. You could try putting a litter tray where the wheel is and moving the wheel.

Re: Is this normal/okay??
He either goes potty in his sand bath or the wheel. All of my past hamsters will usually go in their nest at least a little bit but nothing. There is not evidence that he even goes in there at all! The flat surfaces are wood with contact paper and a layer of paper towel on top. He doesn’t show signs of stress. But I just find it really weird that he won’t make tunnels or nests in the deeper shredded paper substrate.
