Default small cage housing enquiry

hey all ,

its coming up to the month and a half mark since the last cage , so i think its time to give little toffee a new cage setup/theme.

I try to make sure I plan out a cage setup several days before, but the last cage clean and setup took 4 hours, im a massive perfectionist haha .

i have a small cage that i got from pets@home years ago but ive been cleaning out and came across it. the cage is down bellow. its the largest one

http://www.petsathome.com/shop/en/pe...ster-wire-cage

I was wondering if while I clean out his big cage can I temporarily put toffee in there and then im not having to leave him in his ball hours on end.

That sounds ideal. Sometimes I have put my hamster into his travel carrier if I am doing a rare big clean out. Better than too long in a ball. Anyway, you cant keep a proper eye on that while you are cleaning and they are safe in a cage/ carrier.

This is what I do myself - as I'm too am a perfectionist when I'm setting up my Pumpkin's cage so it also takes me a while too! I place her in her playbin or travel carrier and she will fall asleep whilst I clean her cage and normally she starts to wake up when I finished so I can pop her back into her clean cage.
I wouldn't recommend using a ball whilst cleaning cage - as they should only be used for a maximum of 15mins at a time.

Just to mention Best not to be too perfectionist on the cleaning front (although getting the cage just right afterwards is important!) In terms of not cleaning everything too much or at the same time, as it removes the hamster's scent and they can feel quite stressed by everything being cleaned at once.

Apologies if you already know that! With a Syrian you can use a litter tray, which helps the cage stay clean, and also just spot clean mostly - meaning you may only need to do a substrate change every 2 or even 3 months.

I also replace about half the old substrate at that time (the dry half!) and mix it in - so it still smells a bit familiar.

Cleaning the wheel a different week to the substrate, and the toys etc a different week again - means something always smells familiar to the hamster so it's less stressful for them.

I also don't remove the nest unless it's pee'd in - and then try to leave a little bit of dry nest behind and put more nesting material out so they can rebuild it. Also dry hoards can be left for quite some time, and any hoard removed should be replaced with new food in exactly the same place.

It can affect their behaviours if their nest or hoard is removed regularly, or if they are cleaned out too much.

As they get older they seem less worried about cleanouts and even quite interested if something new is added at the same time - but they're always very possessive about nests and hoards

They're also highly sensitive to scented products. I just use warm water to clean the cage base when doing it - or warm water with a bit of fairy liquid in and then rinse well. There's no need to disinfect unless there has been illness or disease. If you do use any cage cleaning product, give the cage a good rinse and air afterwards so the scent has gone before putting the hammy back.

I have the same cage! (not for her to only live in!) but i have one thst came with tubes for £25 and its the biggest cage in the three cages she has all connected to eachother!

(she has a little diy draw that was turned into a little dark cave area for her to hide in if she needs some alone time, a smaller cage thst has three layers(she arrived in it) which by itself has just under 225 square inches i think and the diy one has 243.25 square inches)
