Smile Best cage and toys for a large Syrian hamster??

Hi all!
This is my first post on here!

We have a roughly 6 month old Syrian hamster that we got in October time. He currently has the Pets at Home large cage, which I have 2 of, one on top of the other with tubes connecting the 2. The shop assistant told us that 1 would be enough for him to have plenty of space, but having done research I quickly realised that they were wrong and it wasn't enough room at all! Bentley is a big boy and I could tell he was bored...so I went back and they recommended the other cage to go on top.
Bentley doesn't seem to use the top cage much at all, his wheel is up there, which he spends some time on, but I am still worried that he is bored and not as happy a hamster as he could be! He is quite tame but isn't keen on his ball either, just tries to chew to get out, he much prefers to be running around free!

So my question is... what is your best buy for a Syrian hamster cage please, that isn't ridiculously expensive but plenty of space? I'm not bothered about tunnels as I don't think he is either...

Question 2....hit me with you best toys for hamsters to keep them occupied please? We have a see saw tunnel thing, that he's never been in, a wooden climbing frame thing that i have never seen him use either, his wheel that he does use and a plastic house that came with the cage.

Thank you

Zooplus website has some good cages. The Barney cage Alaska cage, Alexander cage are good sizes. There are also tanks, tank style cages or diy cages you could make.

Tubes for rats or guinea pigs are big enough for Syrian hamsters. A digging area and platforms are often liked.

I'd agree with the above - either the Barney or Alexander. The Barney is a good buy - just under £50 and it includes a good sized syrian house and a good shelf. It also has good floorspace (100cm by 54cm) and is a good height for a 12" wheel while not being too tall.

Our last Syrian was very large and I upgraded him to the Barney from an 80 x 50 cage - because as you say they need large toys and the 80 x 50 cage was ridiculously cluttered with hardly any floorspace left.

I'm happy with the Barney and both our Syrians have been too. Favourite large toys (that hamsters seem to like and use) are -large cork log (acts as a tunnel, a ramp and something to climb over), savic rat tube, rosewood hyacinth tunnel (small size is big enough for a big syrian and it's chewable), rat sputnik (works well hung next to a shelf and/or with a tube leading to it (I tie the tube to the cage roof ).

Bendy stick bridges are always useful. Favourite wheel 12" Silent runner - only comes in orange. Totally silent, safe and sturdy and can be bar mounted.

Have attached some photos of my Barney cage, in which I have most of those, to give you an idea - an old set up and the current set up. I also like the large labyrinth houses that Rodipet sell - but they're a bit expensive and not really necessary as the Barney comes with a good house.

You get a lot of cage for the money. You could use one of the current cages as a play cage/place to go when you do a clean in the main cage.

Here are the toys mentioned

Rat sputnik (you can get different colours on rat rations)

Cork tunnel

This coconut hut (has a hole big enough for a large syrian )

And this is the Barney cage

Forgot the savic rat tube - but best not to use the chains - i use sisal string (which is safe to chew) and/or cable ties.

I love those wicker tunnels that you can get. Zooplus sell them. My hamsters love them to nest in and my guinea pigs love them stuffed with hay!
