Smile Experience with cage Ferplast Favola

Hi
I’ve never had a hamster before, but I’m now considering getting myself a dwarf winter white hamster.
I’ve been looking around for cages, and I fell upon this cage called Ferplast Favola. It is 60 x 36.5 x 30 cm, and from what I could find on the web, that is not too small.
Does anybody in here have some experience, or can anybody give me some advise regarding this cage? Is it appropriate for a winter white? How about the wheel that comes along? Etc...

I hope someone can help me. Thanks.
Anna

Hi & welcome to the forum.
I think the Ferplast Favola is a bit on the small side for a Russian tbh & not really the best design.
I have no idea what size the wheel that comes with it is but you do need an 8" wheel & I don't think it could be that size.
Russian hams are busy little things & need quite a lot of room to explore plus you need space for a good sized house with no base (on deep substrate not on a shelf) & wheel, toys etc so I would suggest something around 80x50cm.
The Hamster Heaven cage is a good size (although best used without the tubes & penthouse!) & The Little Friends Grosvenor Rat and Hamster Cage, .

the recommended cage size for any hamster species is 80 cm. wide by 50 cm. deep by 35 cm. high (2 ft. wide by 2ft. therefore this is too small of a cage.
if you were to get this cage you would need to get a bigger wheel [8inch] as the one that comes with it is too small. also you wouldnt be able to fit many toys to keep your hammy occupied and happy

if your looking for a great hamster cage that is a great sizeand doesnt cost loads i suggest going for the barney hamster cage

Barney Pet Cage | Great deals at zooplus!

its the one i have my hammy toffee in and he love it. it comes with an 8inch wheel , a wooden level, a ladder and a huge wooden house. this cage is actually aimed at syrian hamsters but the bar spacing is small enough that you can house any spicies of hamster in, and the smaller the hamster the more toys and things you can put in.

hope this helps :]

The Barney is a great cage (apart from the tiny doors!) but it's a little tall for a Russian Brian, they will often climb up the bars & simply fall down so it takes a lot of thought to set up a taller cage safely for them, something the approx height of the cages I mentioned is fine though.

Yes the Favola is not quite right - it's a shame because it looks so nice with it's clear base, but it is really quite small and the substrate is underneath the shelf part which would mean the substrate is quite shallow and access isn't good.

A good option for a dwarf hamster would be a Ferplast Duna Multy. It looks a bit plain but you can add toys etc to make it interesting. Hard to find these days but Porton Aquapet sell it, and it's cheaper than the Favola.

The bar spacing on top is small enough for a winter white.

Here are some examples of set ups in a duna multy for dwarf hamsters

If you prefer barred cages and can spend a bit more, then the Savic Mickey 2XL is excellent. Has narrow bar spacing and is quite low in height and a good deep base for substrate. It's slighly bigger than the duna multy - and has a nice big front opening door. (The metal grid shelf needs getting rid of but you can have a flat roofed house as a shelf instead).

Serendipity just wanted to point out that the Savic Mickey & Hamster Heaven cages are virtually identical if you ignore the shelf difference & the silly penthouse on the HH, the bar spacing is very slightly larger on the HH but still fine for a Russian, the bars on the Mickey are a bit flimsier than the HH & the door is a lot noisier! Other than that the main difference is price so I'd go for the HH (I have both & prefer the HH tbh).

Good point - same cage basically Unless you want the smaller bar spacing.
