Default Cage help!

Hello everyone, I'm Sarah and I've had my Syrian hammie Hoshi for just over a month.

He currently lives in a Rosewood pico XL cage. He's got lots of toys (very pampered hammie!) and I've replaced the wheel with a bigger silent spinner.

He's always seemed quite happy but now he's started chewing the bars at night and I'm worried he's bored. He's got lots of different toys to play with and chew. Sadly the pico isn't modular so doesn't have any tubes.

I'm thinking of putting him in a new cage- maybe the Savic Hamster Heaven? I've got a separate burrow box with tubes so could also connect that up to it?

Is the HH a good cage? Any other recommendations? Any help much appreciated as I want Hoshi to be the happiest hammie in the world.

Hello. You're right the Rosewood Pico isn't suitable. The floorspace is too small and it's a also a bit tall so there are fall risks. Well done for putting a bigger wheel in and toys.

The Hamster Heaven is a great cage. However there are other options that cost less and you need to think about what you can fit and other things. I actually upgraded from a cage the size of the hamster heaven and wished I had got something a bit bigger - but then our syrian was quite large and needed a 12"wheel which only just fitted as it's quite a low cage really.

Zooplus sell a good range of hamster cages. The postage is free but they can take 5 to 7 days to arrive. The Alaska, Barney and Alexander are all popular cages for Syrian hamsters. The Alaska is about the same floor space as the hamster heaven but slightly taller so any sized wheel will fit easily and still enough room for substrate. It's also a good price! And has a large front opening door like the Hamster Heaven. I have the Barney (which works out better value even though it costs a bit more due to the good shelf and house it comes with - the Alaska needs a proper house getting for it). If you have space for a 100cm cage. The Alexander costs a bit more but is an excellent cage for a Syrian with a whole other level of shelves and comes with everything but a wheel basically - a large long built in house, which is excellent and big enough to fit a litter tray in, plus two other houses (one has a small window which needs blocking off as syrians can get stuck).

The downside to the Hamster Heaven is - as a basic cage it is very good but all the colourful platforms, houses and tubes are more trouble than they are worth and most people end up having to remove them and start from scratch.

But if you like it,it's a good cage and slightly better made than the Alaska (on the other hand the Alaska folds down flat so you can take it on holiday with you

Zooplus also sell the Hamster Heaven cheaper than most other places.

The Barney is actually cheaper than the Hamster Heaven. The Alexander and Barney also have small bar spacing (7mm) so bar chewing is less likely to happen.

Hamster Cages | great selection at zooplus

The Barney and Alexander are only 20cm longer than the Hamster Heaven but a bit taller (not too tall) and the barney is slightly deeper - it does make a big difference to the amount of enrichment you can fit in and the variation in layouts. You can fit bigger toys and houses in a 100cm cage easier.

For comparison here is a photo of our old Savic Mickey 2XL cage (identical cage to Hamster Heaven but without the tubes and platforms) and the Barney cage

So sorry you were sold the Rosewood cage! It's not cheap. You could use it as a temporary play cage maybe for when doing clean outs in the new cage.

Thank you Hoshi has now moved in to his Hamster Heaven and never looked back!

I was really nervous but he seems really happy. I put a little sand bath in too and he loves it. He must think all his Christmases have come at once!

I haven’t connected it to the Novy burrow box yet, I’ll save that for when he needs another nice surprise

Thanks for all your help.
