Re: When to rearrange cage with a new hamster?
This is our last hamster, Charlie in the rat sputnik - he could climb out of it and onto the open door to get in and out.

I also had one of these little lava ledges just above the end of the house where there was a gap. Our hammy liked sitting under that too. They just screw to the bars.

Re: When to rearrange cage with a new hamster?
Thanks so much for all the photos Serendipity! Your advice is really helpful. It's good to hear that the Leif house is too small, I was a bit scared that it would be so I'm definitely not getting it now. He's still a small hamster but he's only 2-3 months old and has some growing left, I don't want him to get stuck in the future. I'll try out with a cardboard box at first - a Rodipet house looks nice but it's quite a lot of money for a concept I'd like to try out first and I already have several shoeboxes.
In terms of sputniks, is this the one you call a rat size? Just to clarify. The one I have is roughly 21cm so I'm guessing it's equivalent to the smaller one you had.
