Default Hardboard okay for hamsters?

im making a nice playpen for my hamster and ive found that wood strips are very expensive, hardboard is only like £2 is it okay for hamsters? Even if he chews it that little bit?

Yes we find it fine and have used it to line wire shelves etc.
