Default Dig boxes and burrowing areas

Iím doing reasearch about getting a Syrian hamster and I am currently looking into cage setups for diy cages. I was thinking about having a cage that was 80x50cm and a dig box insdide the cage at the edge that was 50x20cm and 20cm high. Could I then fill the rest of the cage with bedding that was only a couple inches high??

Default Re: Dig boxes and burrowing areas

In a cage that size the dig box would take up too much space, your ham needs to be able to dig & burrow over most of the cage area particularly in a cage that sort of size, large dig boxes are really only suitable in really large cages, if your cage was about 80x50 once you have a good sized house, a large wheel & just a few toys it will be pretty full anyway!
Substrate needs to be at least 15-20cm over the whole area.
