Smile Cage ideal for Syrian?

I have a roborovski hamster who is currently living in a Skyline Marrakesh tank which measures at 96cm x 47cm which I feel is big enough for a hamster of her size.

However, I do plan on getting more hamsters after her as I adopted her from a bad situation and am a first time hamster owner and I think that I should put the tank to good use as I spent a lot of money on it.

My question is, would this cage be big enough for a Syrian as I know that they are relatively larger than robos. I would like to get a Syrian after my current hamster but I don't want to do this if the tank will not be big enough for him/her.

Let me know what you think,

Thanks!

The cage would be a suitable size for a Syrian hamster too - although it does depend upon their own personality to what size cage would be best suitable to each hamster. Quite a few members who have Syrians keep them in similar size cage as the Skyline Marrakesh.

I would not go below 1100 sq inch for Syrian, with deep burrowing area, lots of enrichment. If you have space go even bigger. If you have Ikea near you or you're crafty you can go bigger.

Hamster is "happy" with cage when he is not trying to escape, when he is not barr chewing. SO If ther eis space-go for as big as you can. One happy syrian lives in 250 cm x 60 cm (not mine) thats 2232 sq inch.

There is no official recommended size in the UK but most people keep Syrians in cages around 100x50 cm so that cage should be fine.

I have this same cage I had it for penny (syrian) up until her passing. it was great for her I also added a large platform. don't forget you will need larger wheel, toys extra make sure what every you chose fits. I got the silent runner wheel in fine but it had to sit on the glass bottom with a none slip pad glued to the bottom of the wheel. I will attempt to add photos for you.

It's a good size for a Syrian. I agree that adding a platform helps for a Syrian as it gives them more places to go and extra space to put toys on. Amazing that the Silent runner wheel fits in! It must be very tight. That is the only slight issue with the Marrakesch for a Syrian is that to fit an 11" or 12" wheel in you need to have very low substrate at that end of the cage. But there is still plenty of floor area left.

It may depend on the personality of your hamster. Some would be quite happy - some are maverick and want more space - but adding a platform should help with somewhere to climb up to

Yes if it sits on the floor with no substrate under it the silent runner has anout 1.5cm clearance to the lid. but that does mean banking the substrate up so it does not jam up the wheel.

and yes I agree with you serendipity it does depend on the personality of the hamster. Nipper my new boy was a lot more nervous in the Marrakesch he was very alert to sounds so being in a tank style was not good for him so I knew I had to get him out of there. so I got him a barney and he has settled in very nicely and prefers it. so not wanting to waste an expensive cage like the Marrakesch I got a robo Zeek who loves loves loves the Marrakesch. yet Penny (syrian) who was in an Alexander chewed the bottom climbed the bars chewed the bars etc loved being in the Marrakesch and had no further signs of stressing out.

all I can do is share my experience. yes for my syrians it was big enough even without the platform, as I had to remove it as penny got older. I hope we have helped even in a small way.

Yup so true. Hamsters are also individuals we just need to watch them whatever feels right by them Some Syirans are happy in Barney and similar cage, some in Alaska and some need much bigger home.

Thanks for all of your comments guys they have been very helpful!

I think that when the time comes for me to get a Syrian I will see how they are in the Marrakesh, however if I feel that they are stressed and are not happy I will attempt to buy them another/bigger cage.

Thanks for all of your help!
