It depends on the height and bar spacing probably. If it's very tall there would be fall risks - ie risk of injury - but you could make a full level out of a piece of wood to get round that. The bar spacing needs to be 1cm or less or they can either escape or get stuck in the bars. Which cage is it? Do you have details?

I was thinking that was a very good price, but then noticed it's only a kit for the cage not the actual cage itself. Shelves etc. As for the cage - the only real issue is the wide bar spacing (other reviewers say it's too wide for rats).

If you're looking for a good cage or tank in the US we can recommend some, and a lot depends on budget. What kind of hamster is it for - a Syrian?

There are a couple of good cages that are a good size but both cost between $100 to $140. There are also bin cages which are popular and work out cheap. Or diy cages. The detolf is a popular option. You tip it on it's side, leave the door off and just have a lid to make

DETOLF Glass-door cabinet - white - IKEA

A detolf is good for either a Syrian or a dwarf hamster. Bin cages are also good for dwarf hammies but it can be hard finding a bin cage big enough for a Syrian hamster as they have bigger stuff which can take up a lot of the floorspace.

This cage is excellent for a Syrian hamster - the 82 size not the 72 - costs $112

A 40 gallon breeder tank is also a popular option for either a Syrian or dwarf hamster. When Petsmart (or Petco - can't remember) have their $ per gallon sales you can get one for $40 - they have these sales regularly.

Edit - just noticed you said Syrian If you can afford it I would get the Goran - it's a great cage with a big front opening door so good access for cleaning and taming. Comes with a very nice rat tube as well - and you can set it up how you want and don't have to use the plastic shelf. If it's too expensive or you want something bigger, I'd go with the detolf, if you have space and don't mind a bit of diy to make a lid. Or a bin cage.

You could cut large enough panels to allow uninterrupted movement between several bins to increase floor space, and zip tie the bins together.Sometimes a smaller bin between is necessary if the bins don't meet up just right, but the main idea is just making sure nothing is interrupted and that it is done in a way that isn't using tubes and such(as modular cages using tubes and such don't actually increase the floorspace).

Bin modification is fairly simple(doesn't require any extra tools than the standard bin making tools either),and it just happens to be the cheapest way to make cages that can go up to a square meter if not far more!

At this time of year you should be able to get Iris Christmas tree bins They make a great sized bin cage.

That should work and its not that much either. Though it looks it takes more bags of bedding to fill it up. I also hope the table that the current cage is on can hold it.

Yes it would take quite a lot more bedding, but then the more you have the less you use later Especially if it's deep enough. When you have a large cage there is not the need to clean it out regularly. You'd want 4 to 6" depth of substrate ideally - or you could have one end deeper than the other. Then you just spot clean. Syrians will usually use a litter tray with chinchilla sand in, if you put it in their pee corner/spot. Both our Syrians have been toilet trained and the rest of the cage stays dry. I only change the substrate about once every 3 months, and even then only change about half of it and put the dry/bottom half back and mix it in so it still smells familiar.

Getting substrate in bulk can help. Boxo in the US is economical I think. Not sure what you use now, but if you have a favourite substrate, then you could use mostly Boxo and a bit of Carefresh or whatever, in one area.

You'd probably need the substrate lower at one end to fit a Syrian sized wheel in. They need a 10 to 12" wheel depending on how big your hammy is.

Thankfully my ham ham is litter trained and he uses an 11 in though I might have to buy a new one since he's seems to have a hard time running on it. Im not sure what the name of the bedding is but its paper.
