Default Cage suggestions for naughty syrian!

Hi everyone!

Maple is a very active ham and is living in the ferplast maxi duna multy, which I love. However the previous ham who lived in it discovered the small holes for water bottles, if you have the cage or know of it you probably know what i'm talking about and started chewing at it but soon got disinterested.

Maple however managed to chew her way out of the cage whilst in the care of someone else as i was on holiday (she wasn't getting regular run abouts so got stroppy and decided to let herself out). Since then the massive hole and other chewed areas have had a piece of acrylic glued over them but she is still obsessed with the chewing and im afraid the cage is falling apart.

I really love the duna as its not all bars and i can't stand bar chewing! Its also really easy to take to the lady who looks after her.
Does anyone have cage suggestions or anything?
It just needs to be portable and light enough to move around - Maple lives in my bedroom in the day but is moved to the bathroom at night

I recommend a bin cage! Look at some videos on youtube on how to make one they are easy, cheap and portable

Tricky! A glass tank isn't chewable but it's heavy to move around. It might be just she needs more space. So something like the Barney or Alexander would give a lot more space with a shelf and more room for enrichment and extra toys/levels etc. But they're not that light for moving around either. I'd be tempted to just repair the maxi duna so there's nothing left she can get her teeth into. The bottle hole is an issue.

Or as Simonand syril said - you could make a bin cage. If you don't mind a bit of diy.

I've given up on "portable" - I get someone to come to the house if we go away, and when we took our hamster on holiday with us I took a smaller holiday cage (which worked well).

So I'd go with what is going to work, rather than what is portable. That maxi duna is about the only lightweight cage that size.

Would you have room for a detolf? It's a cheap option, lots of space, a bit of diy for a lid but probably easier than making a bin cage. The danger with a Barney or Alexander is - there are stories of hamsters chewing through the base in those too, so a glass tank might be the best option,

DETOLF Glass-door cabinet White 43x163 cm - IKEA

Just noticed it's gone up in price. Used to be £40 - and now £50. It's still not a bad price though.

I had a pretty avid chewer in the Zoosone 2 (like the Duna multi just different brand) and found blocking off the water bottle hole with gnaw sticks worked great and she could no longer chew it so that’s an option. Though I guess it’s a bit of a gamble in case that doesn’t work as well as it did for me.

It’s hard to achieve chew proof and portable.
The Slavic hamster heaven would be portable if you want to go a bit smaller.

Other than that I think the eco habitat from living world comes on wheels so that might be an option.

Hope you find what you’re after!

Thankyou for your suggestions!

I think i may try and hope that the duna holds out and just keep repairing it as necessary, i wish they took out the bottle holes as its easier to have a stand inside the cage anyway!

If all else fails i think i might go for the suggestion of a bin cage even though im not a huge fan of them - i just like the cage to be clear/see through and I just cant find big enough bins

Technically I do have room for an ikea deltof in my bedroom but she is just too loud to sleep with!

It's difficult now the maxi duna is damaged, but as Sabrerose says if you put a bolt or a screw in chew in the bottle hole they can't chew the base - probably too late for that now. But if you wanted another maxi duna that would be the way to go maybe.

The best/largest bin I know is this RUB bin - I think Vectis linked it and I bookmarked it.

It's a good size and depth and they are supposed to be easier to cut than most bins and have a flat top for stacking. It's not quite as big as the maxi duna but it's taller so you could add a platform.
